Last year at the Friday night concert a! Festival winners. performers were not allowed to remain in the P. W. C. auditorium to hear the concert. This did not seem fair to me, especially low thoaewhohldcomea. long dis- tance to pertonm and 1 only hope the committee in charge will not do the same thing again this year. Atter all. without the periormers there would be - no concert at all!

The Music Festival Association heartily agree with C. J. T. and the committee in charge only wish this problem could be solved and HM susseetlons would be very welcome indeed.

The capacity of P. W. C. audi- torium is approximately 900 per- sons and last year at the concert you mention every seat was illled. standing room was all taken and an estimated 200 persons were turned. away. This, despite the fact that none or the periormers comprising soloists, quartets. chor- uses, dancers and other ensembles totalling about 700 persons were seated as it this had been done, 200 seats only would have been left ior the audience!

And it must be remembered that a. concert cannot be held without an audience eitherl

Besides, the income from the final concerts is most necessary to pay the Festival exipenses (this year there will be five adjudicat- ors) so that at the moment no solution to this annual problem seems in sight. Any suggestions anyone?

The victim of ' the a.lternoon's accident recovered consciousness in the inlirrnerio while the doctor wes examining him.

He was lying naked on one oi the (our canvas trame beds, which together with a. heavy wooden operating table and a lame cup- board made up the turniture of the hospital hut. Two men -were standing beside iihe bed - one of them holding an oil lamp aloft- --while old Dr. Brlsaae, on the other side, was bending down teel. ing his ribs and breathing stale cognac over him.

His head had been bandaged, and his lean, unshsven face appeared the browner against the white swathings. -

"Well, follow? what does it feel like?" the doctor demanded, not unkindly.

The injured man blinked up at him with dazed eyes. The head- ache was certainly there - a stab- bing, throbbing agony that shut- tled across his skull from temple to temple - but though he had heard the question his paln-drug- ged brain was incapable of com- prehending it and still less of tor- mulating a. reply.

The orderly leaned' down and shook him roughly by the should- er.

"Wake uipl" he "Answer the doctor speaks to youl" "oh, let him alone," Brlssac ob- sanzed tolerantly. "He'll be all right presently, but I don't sup- pose he's up to polite conversa- tion yet. Let him have his sleep out and he'll be lit ior duty in the morning. Now. let's look at this other case."

He heard their voices mlstily through a haze of pain, but only an occasional phrase ixnapresed itself upon his consciousness. They continued talking. but their voice seemed to become more distant and muffled, and ior a while he was conscious of nothinc but the intolerable throbbing in his brain. Gradually even that dulled and grew leae poignant, and presently he dropped on again in- to an uneasy dose which slowly deepened into heavy sleep.

When he next awoke, the hut was in complete darkness. Dave 101' the faint ghostly. light which crept in through the one barred, unglazed window in the opposite wall. A sound oi heavy marina came irom the corner near the door, where old Jean was sleeping in one of the two spare beds. and he lay tor a. while staring blankly up at the blackness oi the palm- thatched root and trying to ac- count for. his presence here. The pain in his head had now subsided into a. heavy dull ache, and his brain was iunctioning more or less normally, but it took him some time to work out the meaning 0! it all. '

It was the doctor's mention of a falling tree that finally gave him the clue. and quite suddenly the whole picture clicked into shape in his mind.

0! course! He and the big heart? had been working together. They had been using a cross-cut on a rubber tree - and a filthy gummy job it had been. with the teeth getting clogged up every few min- utcs and having to be cleaned- And then there'd been a yell of warning, and they'd dropped ev- erything and bolted for saiety. But somehow he hadn't not clear in tirne. He had a lleetlng recollec- tion or glancing over his shoulder and seeing I. huce IMM 01 INCH- ery hurtling down upon him. and then something had hit him. and that had been the end of thin! as far as he was concerned.
