Miss Cectue GREENBANK, daughter of a Swiss Protestant minister in a Swiss settle. ment in Pennsylvania, went to Montreal some time ago to stay with a maiden aunt, remain- in oon time under a promise of marriage frém one James Holland. Holland backed out, whereupon Miss Greenbank entered an action in Supreme Court for breach of promise. Holland fled to Cincinnati, and news has been received this week that he committed suicide in a bar-room with a pistol, while under the influence of alcohol.

Micuart McManon—a respectable-looking young man—appeared betore the Stipendiary Magistrate this forenoon, charged with the larceny of two pairs of boots from Mr. Charles Leigh. The boots were stolen a few days ago. Mr. Leigh informed the Marshall of the fact, aud gave a description of the boots. Yester- day he cast suspicion on McMahon—-he being recently in Mr. Leigh’s employ. Meeting him on the street he examined his feetwear, and found on him a pair of boots similar to those described by Mr. Leigh. McMahon was taken to the Police Station. Mr. Leigh was sent for and identified the laces, but not the boots. It was afterwards discovered that McMahon traded the newest pair of the stolen boots for the ones he had on with a shoemaker named Kitchen, with whom he left the other stolen ones to be repaired. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor.

TASNKEND, Jan. 8. General Kauffman haa just received from Afghanistan a letter from General Rasgon- off announcing the following facts: Gen. Rasgonoff left Cabul with Shere Ali and all his battalions for the Russian frontier. On leaving his capital the Ameer sent letters to all the English generals, saying that he had left full power with his son Yakob Khan, who had been directed to decline all nego- liations with the invaders of his country, and he (Shere Ali) was on his way to St. Petersburg to submit his differences with Great Britain to the Emperor Alexander. General Kauffman telegraphed to Prince Gortschakoff for instructions as to his con- duct in the event of the Ameer crossing the Russian frontier. Up to this time no reply has been received. Kauffman has advised the reception of the Ameer with such hon- ors as accorded to potentates visiting the Dominions of the Emperor. Lonpon, Jan. 8. The ‘‘Standard’s” correspondent, with the Quettah cylumn, telegraphs that the commander of the British advanced cavalry has sent back a despatch stating that the Governor of Candahar has occupied a de- fensive position on the Tarnak River. Generals Stewart and Biddulph will com- mence a joint advance to-day (Wednesday). They hope tv defeat the Governor and enter Candahar about 10th inst. LIVERPOOL, Jan. 7. The captain of the ship ‘‘Cambrian,” from Callao, reports that on the 29th of Decem- ber, in lat. 48 N., lon. 19 W., he passed a large ship on fire, evidently abandoned. She was painted block, brig rigged, had straight stem, and apparently square stern. Her foremast and boats were gone, and for- ward topworks were burned. No name visible on any part of her. Lonpon, Jan. 7.

The ‘‘Times” says the Irish Executive is seriously cousidering the question of the release of O'Kelly, the only remaining Fenian prisoner.

Barney, Jan. 7. The strike of miners in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire will not be near so large as anticipated. It is expected now that not more than 6,000 operatives will go out ona strike. Desi, Jan. 7.

The Council of the Irish Home Rule League have determined to calla general meeting on the 4th of Feby, for re-organ- ization of the Government in Ireland.

The King of Holland was imarried to the Princess Emma, of Waldeck, at Pyrmont, this evening, with great solemnity. The Duke of Saxony, and Prince William of Wurtemburg were witnesses. Prince Henry, of Netherlands, brotherof the King, was unable to be present on account of ill- ness.

St. Pererspure, Jan. 7. The plague at Astrakhan is assuming se- rious proportions, and fugitives have car- ried the contagion to three adjacent vil- lages. Quarantine has been proclaimed throughoutthe districtof Enotaievek. There have been 400 deaths from this disease to January the 4th. Vienna, Jan. 7. A despatch to the Political Correspondenz from Scutaria, reports : Hussein Pasha and the Montenegrin delegates are conferring to-day, by order of the Porte, with refer- ence to the surrender of Podgoritza to Mon- tenegro. New York, Jan. 7.

The Herald, of Panama, announces that an incipent revolution, in which Segundo Pena, Governor of the district, and three others were killed, was suppressed on the night of Dec. 27th.
