Once again the U.P.E.I. athletic rating for the week is a 50% one as we won two, lost two and tied one. We’ll start off with the two losses and a tie which was the recored of the Lady Panther’s Field Heckey team. On Tuesday we hostessed the Mount Allison Ladies and, although both sides laboured long and hard, the result was a scoreless stalemate. Our team now has a marker in the points column! 0n the weekend we travelled to
Fredericton for two games against the high flying, league leading and
undefeated Red Bloomers. We lost the first game 1-5 with freshman Libby MacKenzie getting our score. (This was only the second that has been scored against U.N.B. .n their eight games this year!) We played well in the second contest dropping it 0-2 in a surprisingly close
game. The U. de Moncton to whom we lost 1—2 on their field in our opening game
(their winning marker coming in the last half minute of play) will be here on Sunday and our final game will be at Mount A. on the 22nd. It would be nice and a great boost for next year’s morale if we could end the season with four more points!
The Soccer story ia a happy one. League leading and undefeated U.N.B. enjoying a N-O—1 record came to play the Panthers who were u—o-z. (percentage— wise , U.N.B. led.) To pariphrase Caesar, "They came, they saw, WE conquered! and THEY left Town with a fl—2-2 record." To be quite honest we did not enjoy the first half of the first game at all for the visitors enjoyed a wide advantage in territorial play and it was only .the outstanding play of goalie Jena Francois Painchaud that
allowed us to reach the half '

the first 20 minutes the second half followed much the same pattern and, shortly after we remarked to a friend that it would take a miracle for us to pull this one out, fate shiled on our efforts! Andy Cameron, Scott Neil and Richard Pierre-Gilles combined to carry the ball to the U.N.B. goalmouth and one of the Red sweatered
deadlocked tie. For
players committed some sort of misdemeanor that resulted in our being awarded .a
penalty shot (or is it "Penalty kick?). Our penalty shot specialist, Steve Polinz, blasted one that their goalkeeper
managed to partially block but it recocheted into the netting and we led ‘1-0! From that point on, with the visitors pressing we seemed to raise our level of play
and kept the ball in their territory much of the time until the game ended in a
1-0 victory for us.
The biggest‘crowd that we have seen at a soccer game here enjoyed the game throughout and were well entertained by four young ladies who, scantily clad, seemed to defy the cool breeze that blew across the field. They even induced CFCY's usually shy Dave Holland (a sucker - for beautiful girls) to join in their dance that was loudly applauded. We were concerned as to how these
sexy beauties would fare when, they walked across campus to their rooms but we were assured that the Security Police would accompany them. Our only
criticism of them would be
that the tallest one should have shaved closer! We were sympathetic when Alan
Stewart who, after sitting on the bench throughout most of the game, was finally inserted into play with about five minutes to to, and just after getting on the field, found himself with the ball past midfield with only the goalkeeper between him and the net!
Unfortunately the referee blew play down as offside and Alan, ' in natural
frustration, made an extra kick at the ball and, for this slight infraction, given one of those yellow
cards that are sometimes awarded, with exeessive~ formality. After accumulated penalties already incurred, thiS' not
only eliminated Alan from further play but it also put
him on the sidelines for the‘
next day's game! Bookstore Russ was even more disturbed than Alan! Game two was quite a different story and we thought the best performance the ' Panthers have staged this ‘year as
was
they controlled play throughout most of the game. Playing against quite a strong wind we were quite apprehensive during the first half until Richard Pierre-Gilles booted one into the net after a brilliant combination play from Donnie MacKenzie at the 27 minute mark.‘ In the
second half, with the wind 7
favouring us, we carried most of the 15 minute mark' Polenz made the most brilliant rush of the game
as he went from his own goal .
through the whole U.N.B. teen and just missed the upper corner as he was blocked from close in. U.N.B. came close a couple of times but Painchaud was really chaud, kept his net inviolate and the game ended 2-0 for us. These two wins catapult us into first place and give us an excellent chance to host the A.U.A.A. championship which will be held at the home field of our section winner on 29 and
line,
30 October. The first and second place teams of the two sections will play a
knock-out tournament which will determine which will be
the Atlantic representative in the quest for the national championship. We play at Acadia on Friday,
Moncton will be here on Sunday and we close out the regular schedule with two at
Memorial in St. John’s (Where Soccer is THE Game) on 22 and 23 October. While
we are quite optimistic enthusiastic we must caution that NO team in this conference isga pushover and it might be remembered that, although we beat U.N.B.
