A Powerrcet Parr.—-Vancouver in her chief and sergeant of police will have a her- culean duo seldom equalled. The chief is Mr. J. M. Stewart, a Prince Edward Islander, 6 feet 4 inches in his socks, who tips the scale somewhere near 270 pounds avoirdupois when he feels good. The sergeant, Mr. John Me- Laren, the well known policeman of this city, who is an Ontarion by birth, stands about 6 feet 2 inches high, and weighs 230 pounds, which, all will admit, are the measurements of a creditable specimen of the genus homo. Both are well proportioned and would be called good looking men anywhere. It is said when Mr. Stewart landed here some two three years ago, a small gentleman, who felt insignificant in the presence of the com- parative giant, enquired, “‘are there any more men like you where you came from? Four American fishing vessels put in here last night fer *‘shelter.” Only one of them has a fare of mackerel. They complain very bitterly of being compelled to keep outside the three-mile limit and say that it will be impossible for them to fish at all on the Atlantic coasts if they are driven to keep three miles outside the headland line. They do not know what they are to do, as half the mackerel season has already gone and they have secured no fish. The Cap- tains, being large owners-in-part. cannot atiord and do not wish to run the risk of seizure. They would willingly go to the Bay Chaleur and North Bay, P. E. I.. if they thought it safe or prudent to do so.

The cruiser Conrad went to sea this morning, and we may expect to hear from her in the course of a day or two.

Nova Scotia Nominations.

Hawirax, June 9.

To-day was nomination day throughout the Province of Nova Scotia. Speeches were delivered in the capital of every coun- ty excepting Halifax. Two of the Oppo- sition candidates in Cape Breton are run- ning as ‘‘ Independents.’ Independent, as well as the regular party tickets, are also nominated in Richmond and Victoria Counties. Only one Tory candidate is run- ning in each of the Counties of Digby, Yar- mouth and Shelburne. The canvass is be- coming very exciting. The Hon. Mr. Me- Lellan is to speak at Kentville, N. 8., to- morrow, and Hon. Mr. Thompson will speak in Cape Breton

Serious Rioting in Ireland.

Bevrasr, June 9.

Serious rioting took place last night. An Orange mob wrecked the houses of pro- minent Catholics. The riot act was read, and the police tired on the mob, which re- plied with revolvers, but the police finally triumphed. Serious rioting is also reported in County Monaghan, and many persons were dangerously wounded. Troops have been ordered from Armagh.

Youthful Criminals. Dorcuestrer, N. B., June 9.

Three boys of tender years have been sentenced to the penitentiary. Eastworks

aged 15 years—received five years for barn-burning, and the two others, aged 15 and 10 respectively, received two and one- half years each for stealing meat, one of them having being encouraged to do so by his mother.

A Dangerous Derelict.

Hauirax, June 9. The brigantine Sappho, from Sikitta for this port, reports that on May 20th, in latitude 21.40 and longitude 6.35 she passed the wreck of a large vessel vurned bottom up and in a position very dangerous to na- vigation.
