For the past six days a fire in the shaft on the eastern slope of the Spring Hill mines has been in progress. N» particulars have been received at the agency cf the company in St. Joon. It is supposed that the fire was pro- duced by embers from the stationary engine, which eoumunicated with the coal and wood- work atthe bottom of the shaft. All the water obtainable has been poured into the aine, aod it was stated on Saturday that the fire was under control.—St, John Telegraph.

Tue longest bridge in the world, says an exchange, is at Laga»g, over an arm of the China sea. It is five miles long and is built of stone. It has three hundred arches, seventy feet high, and a roadway seventy feet wide. It has a balustrade the pillars of which are seventy-five feet apart, each pillar supporting « lion twenty one feet long, made of a single block of marble.
