Coroner's Investigatéon Decides that it was Caused by @n Accident.

This morning Coroner McMahon held an investigation into the circumstances of the distressing accidext by which Mrs Putnam lost her life yesterday. After hearing tke evidence of those who witnessed the affair, he came to the conclusion that the fatality was due to an accident, and that no per on wasto blame. Mrs. Putnam has been staying with her son at Beaurepaire, and yesterday moraing left his residence toe come into town. She drove to the ©. P. R. station aod «vent on to the platform. Beaurepaire the G.T. R. and C. P. BR. tracks run paralell, Mrs. Patoam crossed from the C. P. R. tracks to the platform of the Grand Trunk station just as the Canada Atlautic express from Ottawa was ay \roaching. She stood pear the edge of the platform. andturned to look at her grandson. The enzine on the train ciruck the ur “ortunate lady and threw her to one side. The engiveer of the train saw what had occurred, and stopped his train and then ran it back to the station. Sir Wil- liam Hing+torn, M. D.,and Dr. Powell of Ottawa, happened to be on bourd and the two physicians did all in their power to aid Mre. Putman. She was placed in the Pullman car and the traia preceeded to the city. The congregation at ‘Cherry Valley is to be con gratufated on having as beautiful a church as is to be found in the country dis stricts ef P. E. Island. ft occupies a cama site and its fine tower can be seen for a long distance. The land was donated by Mr. George Irving, of Vernon River Bridge; architect and builder was Mr. Haotley. The building comfortably seat L75 persons. Vem bers of the congregation and friends gave donations of pulpit, ebairs, ra:l, carpets, windows, lampa, etc., besides coatributions in cash.—Guardian.

Tue Bowavista.—The str. Bonavista arrived here last night with a large general cargo. She left at 12 o’clock today wi-h 150 bags of oats, 10 bols vegetables, 15 bbls oysters, 12 cases eggs, 10 head of cattle, 100 sheep. The outward passengers were,J.C. Crosby, and Mrs. Kogers and three children.

Great Leervrer Cominc.—T here is a treat in store for the lecture-loviug people of this city. Tue Rev. R. Wilson, Ph.D, of St. Johe, N. B., is coming on tbe Sth ot October to lecture under the auspices of the Epworth League of Grace Church on the popular subject “The Typical Irish- man,” which deals with .he eloquent, humorous and pathetic in Irish character, and is highly spoken ot wherever it has been deirvered. Remember the date, Tuesday, October 5th, at 8 o’clock.

Fises—The alarm about eight o’clock on Saturday night was for a fire in the McKay Woolen Mills, at Spring Park. The fire was in a box of waste weol in a room over the boiler. The firemea promptly re-pouded to the call, bat their services were nov needed as the fire was extinzuish- ed by the mill hands before any material damage was done.

About eight o’clock yesterday morning there was auothe-alarm, the fire being in

a pile-of slack coal on Queen’s wharf this iime. Spontaneous combustion caused this fre, which gave the firemen consider- able trouble.

Q. C. R. A.—The annual prize meet- ing of the Queen’s County Rifle Associa- tion will be held on the Kensington rifle range on Wednesday, the 29th inst, comamenc ng at one O'cluck p. m., sharp. Besides the usual cash prizes the silver and bronze medals of the D. R. A. will be competed for. ihe entrance fee to each match will be 25 cents including ammuni- tion and one sight shot which is com- pulsory. There will be two matches, one at 500 yards and one at 660 yards, ten shots at each. The silver aud bronze medals of the DR. A. will be given to first ard second in the grand agg regste respectively.
