J. W. Laxercan.—The death of Mr. James W. Lanergan, the well- known theatre man, is reported to have occurred in Boston. Mr. Lanergen was a native of Fall River, Mass., and was born about 57 years ago. In his boyhood days he worked for a time in a shoe factory. ulema A MAN named William McCallum, haul- ing logs in the woods, at Hastings, Oum- berland, N. 8., a few days ago, was killed by a tree felled by another man. His brother and a horse had a narrow escape at the time, the tree falling within two feet of them. An inquest was held and a verdict of accidental death returned. nila Tur body of a man, aged 24, named Jacob Henofoby, was found frozen stiff, lying on the road about eight miles from Morrisburg, Ont., on the morning of the 28th ult. From the appearance of the clothing foul play is suspected. The House met at 3 15; and, after peti- tions, several bills were introduced, among them!two iGovernment measures—An Act in reference to the revised statutes and au Act to regulate the transfer of land in the Northwest. These were both introduced | by Hon. Mr. Thompson with explanatory speeches, which by their clearness, con- ciseness and comprehensiveness recom- mended both the bills and the Minister to the House.

Mr. Coursol moved that the three mom- bers whose names were not included in the Government list of members for the sever- | alcommittees should be puton the com- mittees. } Sir Hector Langevin said the Govern- | ment had no objection, but proposed to amend the motion by adding to the Com- | mittees several other names. The Oppo- | sition were warm in their sympathy with | the men who deserted the Government |

The suspension of Nickerson, & Co., Steamship owners, is the sensation of the hour. The Boston, Halifax ani P, E. Island line of steamers ere in- volved. The assets are nominally placed at $600,000, and it is thought, with judicious handling, the creditors may receive a large
