Perhaps that text the preacher quotes Sometimes—~** Train up a child” — Means only train the little girls And let the boys ran wild. But patience, and the time will come When we boys will be men, And when it ioes, I rather think Wrongs will be righted then.

Never hamper and handcuff a child with @ multitude of rules. its nature should be
spontaneous. Adults may hedge them selves round with as many rules as they please. it is their own affair, but children
cannot bear this treatment.
Children need sympathy. Parents should be able to comprehend their notions and take an interest in their thoughts and feelings. It will give a stronger bond of sympathy which will atrengthen the child's moral convictions and keep it from gving into wrong courses in after life.
If achild inherits a nervous temperament yreat pains should be taken to eultivate the vital temperament, this is best done by cul- tivating quiet habits, giving plenty of sleep and abundance of healthy food, especially bread and milk, nuts, fruit, ete. If on the ether hand a child inherits a phlegmatic temperament the nervous system may be stimulated.
The proper time fer taking the young child at at first into the epen air will be determined by the season of the year. One bern in spring or summer may, in fin weather be taken out when about fourteen days old, and by degrees accustomed to it in all except very damp or chilly weather, and when winter comes on it may still en- jey the purefree air upon every mild day.
In some families children are made a show of before company to an extent that would sugyest the idea that they were being trained te the theatrical profession. Such precucity and boldness in social matter, 18 injuriens to the child, begetting as i: does seitishness and vanity, and cansing a a dislike for the humble and obscure duties and labors that ali children should be trained to perform. But one glance into the face, into the beaming eyes of your darling, fills the heart and makes the burden light. ‘‘True, what you sacrifice for the world,” says Jean Paul, in bis Levana, ‘‘is bu poorly recog- nized by it, for it isthe man that rules and reaps tle harvest. The thousand night watches and sacrifices by which a mother secures to the state a hero or a poet are forgotten, not even mentioned, for the mother herself does not mention them, and so one century after another do the wives unknown and unrewarded, send forth the arrows, the stara, the storm birds and the nightingales of time.

Count Massena, a son of Napoleon’s Marshal Massena, died in the poor-house in Salt Lake, a few days ago. In an obituary of this man, the Salt Lake ‘‘ Tribune” goes around the maxim,, ‘‘Of the dead speak nothing unless good,” and ascribes his end to a career of meanness and rapacity such as marked his most notorious father’s life. The wife of the deceased is now a domestic in a Salt Lake family.
