Do, as your daughters grow up, teach at least, the true meritsof housekeeping and cookery ; they will thank you for it in later life, a great deal more than for .ccomplishments.

Do try and sympethize with girlish flights of fancy, even if they seem absurd to you; by so do- ing you will retain your influence over your daughters and not teach them to seck sympathy else where.

Do remember that, although they are all your

children, each one has aa individual character, and that tastes and qualities vary indefinitely. Do cultivate them separately, and not as if you were turning them out by machinery. _Do encourage them to take good walking exer- cis}. Young ladies in this country are rarely good walkers. ‘They can dance ali night,. but are tired out if they walka mile. Girls ought to be able to walk as easilyas boys. Half the nervous diseases which afflict young Jadies would disap- pear if the habit of regular exercisé was en- couraged.

Do cultivate alittle imagination in your child- reh ; when they are small, encourage them to en- Joy fairy tales ; as they grow older, lead their tastes in the direction of imaginative literature. Life in our century is too proshic;: give them a taste for romance while they dre young.

Do take them yourself, if you can, to places of amusements ; let them associate you with their enjJoyments; when they are parents themselves the memory of it will intinence them in thelr treatment of their children. For their sakes, en joy life with them if possible, clouds will come soon endugh.

Do, if you say no, mean no. Unless you have a good reason for changing a given command, hold to it.

Do take an interest in your children’s pleasure ; mothér’s participation is a great delight.

Do remember that trifles to you are mountains to them ; respect their feelings,

Do keep up a high standard of principles ; your children will be your keenest judges in the future. Do be hone st with them in small things as well as in great. If you cannot tell them what they wish to Know, say so rather than deceive them.

Do reprove your children for tale bearing; a child taught to carry reports from the kitchen to the parlour is detestable.

Do send the youngsters to bed early; decide upon the proper time, and adhere to it.

Do remember that visitors praise the ehildren asmuch to please you as because they deserve it. and that their presence is oftener than not an infliction.

COASTING IN THE SouTH.—Te ceast without $ now is not such a very difficult problem. The hills around Columbus, Ga., are just now enlivened by the sport of the pine straw riders. The long- leaved pine of that region sheds its needles or straws, in such quantities that they completely cover the ground. From these exudes @ gummy substance which canses them to stick together and make the ground almost as smooth and hard as if coated with ice. Seats are made fast to rockers or runners, and it is great sport to glide Over the pine straw coasting grounds.
