He was a young min of great promise, and his sudden death, caused by native cholera, was the occasion of genersl regretand wide comment. By the sudden death of his brother, the home circle was broken in upon, and James H., the subject of the present sketch, ,and the next decided to stand in the gap, couscious, however, ofthe fact that he might never beable to fill it. In 1887 Mr. McLaren was admitted to Bangor Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1890, and the sam? year ordained over the churches of Ph lips and Strong, Maine. Here in a_ wide and scattered field, he labored for over two years, preaching three timeson Sunday and riding fourteen miles. Although urged to remain lounger, heso felt the neeed of amore thorough preparation for the great work before him, that he enter- ‘4 Borodwoin co'lege in the Junior year, bu. af.erwards changed his ;lans and took a ivurtu year course at Andover, Mass. He was then called tothe Central church at Attleboro, Mase., and accepted with the privilege of still further prosecating his studies in Brown University. After three years ®0 spent, he entered Yale University fora final year of study; and from there he became pastor of the ‘irst Congregational church at Racine, Wis- coneip, where his esnecess un- der difficulties, was most remarkable Upon his resigoing-pastoral charge of that congregation a resolution of regret at bis departure was passed in the course of waich a splendid tribute was paid to the painstaking and capable manner in which he had discharged the various oll gations of the important position.

Asa preacher, it is said, Rev. McLaren is ranked among the foremost in the younger ministry, He prepares his ser- mons With greatcare,but epeaks ueuslly without notes. His memory remark ~ able and his mind original acd creative— some of his original illustrations having won prizes. Iltis said of him further, that he frequently lays aside a sermon pre- pared, and presents some new line of thought which the occasion inspires. Many of nis finest discourses haye been given in this way. Several of bisspecial sermons have been printed and widely read. In prayer be seems to be completely at home, leading the weary and troubled soul to sweet safety Sand rest. His infiuence with youog men has always been marked and powerful. Asa poet he has written some pieces, which the press has charac- terized as “Geme of Literature.”

Those who know Rev. McLean best, deciare that the quality which gives him specuf power, aud that for which he is most loyed, in bis wonderful sympathy and kidness of heart. He often takes the trouble of others to heart to such a degree a3 has more than once ucmanoned him, for the time being tor his work. He is always the friend of the poor, and class diatinc- tions he positively refuses to recogoiz:. Brave, strong and fearless on the one hand, on the other he is gentle acd confiod~ inggas a little ch li. In the company of philosophers or statesmen, he can beeith- er, and ia the presence of one of them. He has worked his own way through{ school and isinthe truest sensé a “self made man,” having more than once refused help from those who were interested in him. It is further said of him, that wit and humor are bie, and he has lectured on these sub- ject with gratifying success at [Chautau- quas and eizewhere. One of his weaknesses is eaid to be lack of self appreciation. He loves to please and considers it one’s Chris» tian duty to do so; but he cares not for praise as such.

Rev. Mr, McLean is « bard and faithful worker, as we are advised from news paper accounts before us and no cons gregation can sleep or shirk under his administration. Ofbimself he says: “I am bound to help make the worll a little better place to liveia before I leave it, I

province like ours; batthis is a question which affects our land from the Pacific to the Atlantic and (from the United States to the frozen regions of the north. Why should nota country which is fast growing into manhood and assuming the garb of a nation be without & mintof ite own, while its mineral resources are attracting the admiration of the civilized world. Iiis too bad that with al the wealth of the Klondike at our command we have notasingle gold coin stamped inourcountry. Why should not our Goveroment establish a mint to which

the miner could bring his bullion and have it converted into coin paying in_ buliilion the cost

of manufacture? Weasa nation have only seen d. llars (more or less) per caoita ian c'rculation, while other nanous with- out such naturel resources have over forty. Now if our government would coin ten millions # year (say), twenty years they would brnig us on apar witn other na- tioas aud this would be themeans of open~ ing up our mines, of developiog our mineral resources, of givirg emy;loyment io tens of thousands of people and of stimulating bu-iness activity from one end ofthe Dominion tothe other. A large company of easily gulled in- dividuals was victimized a shbort time back in a small country town. By means of posters announeing a grand sacred concert and by a free distribu- tion of complimentary tickets bearing on their face this condition, ‘‘No Gen- tleman Admitted Unless Accompanied by « Lady,’’ a large audience was gather- ed at the theater. When the crowd began to press in through the doors, the ticket taker began shouting:

‘All having complimentary tickets will please pass up stairs tothe gal- lery.’’

This wae a dark, dreary, hot place, not having the capacity for seating comfortably more than 100 people. Those who pressed forward with their tickets were told that if they did not wish to go to the gallery they could be admitted by paying a sbiliing apiece. Every man who appeared with a com- plimentary ticket of course had a lady with bim and felt a sort of embarrass- ment if she were not his wife or inti- mate acquaintance, so he yieMled to compulsion and paid rather than retire, and so the scheme succeeded to the ex- tent of filling the house.—London An- ewers.
