3,000 Get Instruction In Water Safety In Queen's

Queen’s County Red Cross wat- er safety service provided swim- ming and water safety instruct- ion for upwards of 3000 people of varying ages in 28 centres includ.‘ ing the 6 supervised areas in the National Parks.

Stanhope Beach was one loca- tion where swimming classes proved a focal point of interest for hundreds of tourists.

Local water safety committees sponsored this summer-time ed- ucational program in all these centres in co-operation with the Provincial Red Cross Water saf- ety Service. Douglas C‘udmore, Red Cross field supervisor test- ed the swimmers in most of the areas in Queens County, with Miss Joan Murphy and Malcolm Lodge, Red Cross field supervis- ors for Kings and Prince Coun— ties, doing the testing in some cases. He is a native of Rose Valley P.E.I. held pastora-tes in Nova Scotia and is a member of the Truro Presbytery.

In his report to General Conn cil, Dr. Mla-cdonald will point out that if the prophecy that Canada’s population in 1957 will be increased by 10 million peo- ple, this would mean another two million United Church people.

Question Youth In NY. Slaying

NEW YORK (AP) —— An 18- year—old youth, who was reported to have left New York two days ago, was under questioning 'in Virginia Friday in connection with the strange and confusmg Staten Island knife slaying of Dr. and Mrs. Melvin Nimer. .

The youth was identified as Wil- lia-m Fletcher. What possible con- nection he may have had with the New York case was not immedi- ately disclosed by New York and Virginia authorities. .

They reportedonly that he was being questioned ,by New York police at Farmyille, Va. Reports reaching here were that he was picked up there Thursday night on orders of New York authori- ties while he was waiting for a bus.
