A minister of the Gospel was ‘once holding a series of evangel- istic meetings in I Canadian peni- tentiary.‘ As a pert of his work he arranged for an hour in which any- one interested in the Gospel offer m ht come for a personal inter- vi w. A Young Nelro came in one day and started the conversation in I. bentering mood. He showed the preacher an American cent with Abraham Lincoln's face on it. a coin which he had picked up in

found this one and it started me thinking. Here is a man who died that I might be free. and this is the way I've used my freedom. Then you are telling us of One who died to save us, and look how I've treated him. Now I've decided to begin all over again and start a new life."

the convicts. the governor of the state handed him a pardon for one of them~a woman who had served for years and was only half way through her sentence. After the service was over the evangelist announced that ho had a pardon for one of his hearers. The entire audience was thrown into such a state of excitement that Moody himself was overwhelmed so that he could not utter another word. At last he managed to shout the name of the one pardoned. and she fell into hysterlcs and could only laugh and cry in an ecstacy of de- light. Jesus in His Gospel announces an amnesty for sinners and it is alien to all who will receive it.

hrhulng this message of forgive- ness to the class which needed it melt-_-the outcasts of His time. He broke with the mcralists of that day on this issue. \'I'hey said: The blacker the sin the deeper the guilt, and. there- fore, the severar the punishment deserved. He said: The blacker the sin the deeper the need. and there- fore the stronger the claim on the grace of God.

They said: A just God is glorified by~dealing out stem justice to the transgressor.

Jesus’ said: A good God is glori-

fied more truly by turning a sin- ner against his sin than by destroy- ing him for it.

He practiced what He preached. Everyone knows that it is one -thing to preach an universal par- don as a doctrine and another to- tally different to forgive persons in the act of inflicting the most cniel injuries on oneself. Yet while the soldiers were driving the nails through His hands and feet Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." (Luke 3:34).

To find such a spirit in such circumstances stirs the imagina- tion. There is nothing in human nature which enables us to account for it. Miss Caroline Macdonald, a missions y to Japan, tells of the effect of this story on a criminal sentenced to death for crimes of a most revolting character. one day she handed him a copy of the Gospel of Luke and he read it be- cause he had nothing else to do. At first he was languidly interested in it as a story; then his interest deepend ‘ as Luke's ception of Jesus’ character got hold of him. But when he came to this prayer "Father, forgive them. for they know not what they do." he said. "It pierced my heart like is five- inch nail." Japan had once had a patriot who loved her gnough t6 be impaled for her, but he died ini- precsting the most fearful curses on his tcrturers; and here Jesus. crucified because of His agony, pleads for the forgiveness of those who were nailing Him to the tree. That picture transformed the man who saw it into the Oery image of the Christ. Miss Macdonald's ac- count is entitled. "A gentleman in prison" and no convert ever de- served the title more truly.

Good Friday and Easter Sunday are at hand Good Friday reminds us of the price which Christ paid for our redemption, and Ills triumph over death on Easter sun- day is the guarantee of His success and of our salvation in Him. "Cal- vary day and Easter day are just one day apart." But as we live by forgiveness, let us learn to forgive. "Forgiveness with the For-giver in lt." is the Gospel offer: we must forgive as we have been forgiven. Our Lord, whose mercy is as high as the heavens. has taught us to prs.y,"t1"orgive us our uespssses as we forgive those who trespass against us." Those who will not forgive cannot be forgiven. Bitter- ness reigns in many a soul because he cannot forgive: let each take his place this season among the Reconciled who are Reconcilers tor Christ's sake. -

A meeting of Glenaladale Home and School Association was held in the school on Monday. March 20th. The Honorary President, Rev. K. C. MacPherson presided. In his introductory remarks the chairman commented on the ap- propriateness of the name Home and School Association. and added that money invested in education pays the highest dividends. .'f'he guest speaker, Dr. L. W. show, in his remarks,, developed this point further. He indicated the great necessity for parents and teachers to come together from time to time. and insisted that the primary purpose of this Association is to talk about the child. "Before the child goes to scliool.". said Dr. Shaw, "he learns nearly all the habits he will ever have As he grows up his teachers are; flrgﬁ his parents; secondly. his brothers, sisters, and playmates: thirdly, the community with all its organizations; and fourthly. the, school." As time went on. however. and civilization progres- sed. the parents, as a rule. had neither the time nor the education to meet the growing needs of the times. E I. libraries then commented on the advantages of child psychology, and informed the members of a great variety of books. namvhl . and films which may be obtained from the library. The Reverend K. At mention of the word "wood- pecker". we immediately picture a bird clinging to a tree trunk. But one member of the family behaves differently. when spring sun melts the snow from the open country. Flickers return to our parks. where they act more like Robins search- ing for worms than like Wood- peckers. They are combing the ground for ants and ants’ eggs. which they pick up with their long.

and crickets.

Once we have noticed the ap- pearance, voice. and behaviour of this familiar bird it is simple to identify ever afterwards. About three inches longer than 3. Robin, it is mostly brown. Yellow under the wings and at the sides of the tail have suggestetl the names Golden-winged, and Ycilc\v-shaft- ed Woodpecker. But a big white patch at the end of the back is the most noticeable thing about the plumage, especially whcn we see the Flicker in it. cliaracteristlc, deeply undulating flight. A close

Flicker is unmistakable. but its large vocabulary is confusing. “Flick. flick", "yarrup, yarrup",.

In spite of the fact: that much time is spent on the ground. a Flicker likes tall trees in which to make a home. Apple trees are favourites, but even bird bones sometimes are an attraction. It was not until telephone poles stretched across the prairie prov- inces that the Northern Flicker was found that far west. This great carpenter chisels out a cavity, Eenerally about ten feet up, but often much higher, as another name, High Holer, indicates. Here five to ten white eggs are laid. An experiment once proved that Mrs. Flicker is so anxious to have the right number to incubate that she will lay up to seventy-one if an egg is. day is taken from her. Holes carved out by this bird are later on much sought after by a dozen or more species unable to do their own excavating.

SA RAH CAMPBELL ANDREW

The death of Sarah Campbell Andrew. daughter of the late H. H. Crosman took place in Van- couver. B.C.. on Feb. 14th last. at the age of 65 years. Mrs. Andrew better known here as Sadie Cros- man, left her home here in Char- lottetown at the age of 16 years and served in the salvation Army for many years. ahe was a Captain in the Army for some time.

She resigned from the Army and settled in Toronto, Ont.. carrying on business as e diessmaker and furrier. She married John Camp-I bell Andrew of Liverpool. Eng. who, was in delicate health at the time and passed away-a year and a half later. Shortly after his death to fuliill his request she took a trip to England to meet and visit» her husband's people there. On’

She was buried in Vancouver. B. C. on Feb. 20th. Surviving are four sisters and three brothers. Mrs. Mary Yorston of Georgetown.
