| RECEPTION OF HON. MR. LANGEVIN

AT THREE RIVERS. THREE Rivers, Aug. 6.

The demonstration on Saturday was a magnificent aifair. A large body of electors were present at the station, and, as Mr. Langevin descended from the train, re- ceived him with prolonged and enthusiastic cheering. He appeared in excellent health and spirits, and to have benefitted by the sea voyage. He was received by Mr. Wm. MacDougall and conducted to the City Hall, which was soon thronged with an immense audience. Dr. G. A. Bourgeois was called to the chair, and in a few appro- priate remarks introduced Mr. Langevin, whose appearance was hailed with great en- thusiasm. The hon. gentleman spoke for about an hour and a half, after which the meeting was addressed by Mr. Gerin. Mr. Langevin took the boat for Quebec the same night

A gentleman who has just returned from the Upper Gottneau says that the crops in the vicinity of the Lievres have been totally destroyed by heavy hail storms in many places. They will not be worth harvesting

UNITED STATES. San Francisco, Aug. 6.

Parties here have discovered the wreck of the steamer Brother Jonathan, foundered off Point St. George, in July, 1865, and she hes upright in twenty-two fathoms ef water. There are about a million in treas- ury notes and bullion in her safe, and the founders are fitting out an expedition for its recovery. The treasure belonged to the Government, whose claim, it is held, lapsed on the expiration of ten days after, the loss.

GREAT BRITAIN. Lonpon, Aug. 5.

A Frenchman named Guerin was ar- raigned yesterday, charged with having threatened to assassinate Franceschini Pietre, Secretary to the late Prince Im- perial, if not paid a sum of money which he alleges was due to him for promoting the success of the last plebiscite.

Dr. Kirk, British Consul General at Zanzibar, writes that Kieth Johnson, leader of an expedition to explore the head of lake Wyassa, died ef dysentery on the 28th June, at Berbero, 130 miles inland from Daressalaam. The expedition will be con- tinued by Thomson, scientific assistant of Johnson.

The Irish University Bill made good pro- gress in the House of Commons in coim- mittee last night. Newspapers appear to think there is now every prospect that the bill will become law at the present session.

King Menelk, who rules over the south- ern portion of Abysinia has sent a letter to the Anti-Slavery Society announcing that he has abolished slave trade throughout his dominien.

A Dublin despatch says that the Home Rule League will, at a special meeting, dis- cuss a proposal of converting the league into a regularly elected convention of the Irish nation.

The Executive Committee of the Mas- ters’ Association of North and North-east Lancashire, yesterday discussed the neces- sity for further reduction of wages of cot- ton operatives 10 per cent. in all branches. Discussion was then adjourned. It will be almost impossible for operatives to resist another reduction, as the funds of the operatives’ union are exhausted.

SOUTH AMERICA. New York, Aug. 5.

The Peruvian Minister has received the following from the Consul General of Peru at Panama :—Panama, Aug. 4.—‘‘The Hu- ascar’ and ‘Union” have visited the Chili- an ports, destroying launches and captur- ing the steamer ‘‘Rimac,” with an entire Zungay regiment of cavalry fully armed and supplied with horses, besides three vessels loaded with coal and copper.

As England and France insist upon the premised reforms being carried out in Asia- tic Turkey, the Porte has requested them to select persons to be nominated for posts of financial and judiciary inspectors and or- ganized under Gen. Darmarie.

WasHINGTON, Aug. 6.

The War Department has received a des- patch from Gen. Miles, confirming a press report of Major Waish and Long Dog, to that officer, and their report of the move- ments of Sitting Bull and his band. Gen. Miles says in conclusion : ‘* In brief if they are determined to remain in that territory under Canadian authorities on this assur- ance, from a representative man of Indians and an official of the Canadian Govern- ment,” I should feel authorized in with- drawing my men. There can be no cenflict now, unless it follows an invasion.

Ravages Among the Crops in Russia.

It is reported that twelve thousand ma- chines are now engaged in Southern Russia in the task of exterminating the corn beetle. Large sums have been voted by the authorities of the Provinces towards the expenses involved in hiring thousands of hands to destroy this pest ; but its rav- ages are reperted to be on the increase, notwithstanding all the efforts exerted by the Government and the people. A new visitor has, moreover, arrived in the neigh- borhood of Odessa, in the shape of the Hessian fly. The wheat crops in the dis- trict where it has appeared present the as- pect of having been subjected to a devas- tating hailstorm. This destructive insect was never previously known te cross the Russian frontier.

Beecher in Halifax.

Halifax exchanges all speak in glowing terms of Beecher’s lectures there. The Halifax ‘‘ Herald ” says :—

Those who, before attendieg Mr. Beecher’s lecture last evening, expected to be intense- ly delighted by what they were to hear, were net disappointed. From the moment of Mr. Beecher opening his mouth he held hisaudience spell-bound. His peroration was classic, chaste, and eloquent in a high degree. Mr. Beecher is probably the most successful and most finished of platform speakers. His elocution is absolutely perfect, for noth- ing but elocution without defect could filla large building, and carry the speaker’s lowest and lightest notes to every corner of the house. In his own sphere, he has no equal, nor is his reputation, world-wide as it is, anything but well deserved. To those who can appreciate true, and good and finished speaking, he min- isters absolutely well to their tastes. We would cordially recommend all who have not heard him, by no means to lose an opporthnity which may not be pre- sented to them again in this city for many years tocome. Millions have hung in per- fect rapture on his words. This can never happen without true merit. He is a strong man—the Prince of platform speakers—he can entertain and delight by the hour, and when he finishes his audience regrets that his lecture was not longer. This is the highest commendation, and is well des- erved.

Tue school house at Pownal has just been completed. The ‘‘ Patriot” says it is, in- deed, a credit to the inhabitants of the Dis- trict. It is large, well-finished, and hand- somely furnished. It is divided into two class-rooms, and nothing that the comfort of the children requires, appears to be neglected. The intelligent, enterprising trustees have provided a spacious a for the scholars of the Pownal Schoo]. This is not by any means the worst part of their school arrangements. In. most country districts the children have no other playground than the highroad, and while amusing themselves there, they are apt to say and do things that are not approved of by the passers- by. In fact, children who have no other playground than the road in front of the School House, are continually getting into scrapes and they frequently earn a bad reputation for themselves, their teacher, and the whole dis- trict. We shoulfl say that as regards the building, furniture and playground, the Pownal School is a model for country districts. The teachers in it are Mr. Robertson and Miss McEacherr.

The wearied newspaper reader will doubi- less be thankful during these dog days for a succint account of the troubles between tle South American republics in preference to columns even by telegraph. In February, 1878, Bolivia passed a law imposing upon the export of nitrate from Antofagasta a duty of ten cents per quintal. Chili de- clared this was a violation of the treaty of 1874. The Bolivian Government sus- pended the operation of the law for a short period, but re-enacted in De- cember last. Chili thereupon occupied the territory between the twenty-third and twenty-fourth degrees. Bolivia thereupon offered to refer the matter to Peru, and the propesal was accepted. That Government ordered Chili to evacuate Antofogasta, which she refused to do. Chili thereupon declar- ed war upon Bolivia, and at the same tim Peru declared that it was bound by secre treaty to support Bolivia, The military

forces are still watching each other. -_

THE Moncton Times of the 6th says :— ‘* A hail storm, the products of which were larger than the oldest inhabitants have ever before seen, visited us yesterday. For a quarter of an hour there was a steady fall of hail—real solid iee—-the grains as large asa good-sized bean. We are told that some picked up pieces an inch and a quar- ter long and a quarter of an inch thick and wide, but these we did not see. Thunder and lightning accompanied the storm, which has continued at intervals till the present writing, the fall of rain this morning being something almost unprecedented.”

The London World says the British Em- bassy at St. Petersburg, which has been kept somewhat at arm’s length for the last year or two is rapidly regaining its past popularity. This is in great = owing to the admirable social tact of Lord Dufferin which, combined with his winning man- ners, was found so irresistible in Canada whilst Lady Dufferin, during the short time she spent at St. Petersburg, won all hearts by the display of those qualities which have rendered the ‘“‘handsome Hamiltons

of Killaleagh” so deservedly popular.
