Rutherford says—‘There is a tremend- ously strong anti-foreign feeling all over China. and there is some good reasons for it, too. ‘The poor China- man is being stripped piece by piece,

and no wonder he thinks it is time to object. They connect foreign- ers with the religion of Jesus Christ; think it is a

national religion, and so vent their fury on the Church and Chinese Christian, for joining them.

‘When we go out on the street we hear, “Ha, ha foreign devil, the Boxers have come, and you haven't much longer to live,“ or, “There is ene of those Christians. She will be killed soon.” This has all broken’ out within the past few months, that is, in Pekin; it was as quiet as_ possible before that.’

AN OBJECT LESSON.

When the Boers shall have been sub dued, they will have learned a_ lesson most impressively taught them by the massing of the colonial recruits upon the South African veldt—the lesson of empire. A trooperin the Canadian mounted rifles relates this experience in a letter, dated Bloemfontein, April 23, and describing the march thither along the main road from Springfontein:
