Councillor Harris said this was a matter of interest to everyoné. He was of opinion that the present Surveyor was not—by nature or education—fit for the situation he occupied. He had great difficu'ty in having bis, orders carried out; and eaid that there wasa great many complainis onaccount of the present inefficiency o! the Surveyor. He therefore moved

Councillor Byrne thought the motion rather hasty, and requested that it sould stand over tc the next meeting of Coun- cil, so that every member might express an Opinion with regard to the matter.
His request was granted, and Councillor Harris gave notice that at next meeting of Council he would bring in a motion for the dismissal of James McNally, City Surveyor.
The Council then adjourned till Wed- nesday evening next at 7.30.

[uz Refor Club Entertainment last evening was .2t what might be called an immense success, as firstly there was uot a large audience; and secondly, judging from the performance, there appeared to |bave been a lack of time previously, in |which to work up the details proper y. For instance, the Orchestral Club did nob perform nearly as well as at their own ‘Concert of the 5th instant, as there was terrible appearance of slovenliness apd attention to Cetails, both in
want of their stage arrangements and execution of their pieces. Delays, caused by performers loosing their music, by want of a system of tuning, are exasperating to an audience. Also the tuning, particularly in one piece, appeared to have been im- perfectly done, Carelessness, and not in- competancy, is what is meant. A very good humored and indulgent audience made every allowance for this, as every piece on the programme was enthusis- astcally received, Mr, Fletcher in his cornet solo “ My Pretty Jane,’”’ did himself great credit for an amateur. The articula- tion in the Cadenza was very neat and correct. On the whoie, it was a very en- joyable entertainment, and worthy of be- ing repeated, as the President, Mr. James McKechine, announced, on Thursday, the 29th inst., with a slight change ,of pro gramme. We hope it will be well patro- nized,

- ——~<> 062 oe -— Laroany.—A girl named Eliza Bryenton was, yesterday, arrainged before the Sti- pendiary Magistrate, and charged with stealing some wearing apparel from a girl named Eliza Allen. Both were living in the same house at the time of the robbery. The evidence produced was conclusive, and Miss Bryenton was sentenced to one month; imprisonment with hard labor.

At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, Patrick McNamara Henry Power and Charles McKay, were each fiaed $2 and costs or eight days for being drunk and incapable. Thos. Bourke. sailor, for the same offence, was fined $1 and costs or fourteen days. Eliz Bryen- ton, on complaint of Eliza E'm for larceny of wearing apparel, committed one month wita hard labor, George Morrissy, on complaint of William Carroll for assault, was fined $4 and costs or twenty days.
Lecrurs.—J. H. Fletcher, Exsq., editor of the P. E. Island Argus, lectured in Prince Street Hall, Pictou, on Thursday eyening last, to a good audience. After preliminary singing by an excellent choir, Mr. Fletcher was introduced ito the audience by J. D. McLeod, Esq., and at once began the lecture, well koown in the Lower Provinces, ‘Six Weeks on Whee!s,”’ or across the continent. At the beginning. chiefly descriptive, the lecturer soon grew eloquent in bis delineation of the beautiful mountain and prairie scenery of the United States, and his fine passages were

Another embezzlement case is reported in Toronto, A cashier of Messrs. Muloch & Campbell absconded with large sums of his employers’ money. he particulars are withheld by the firm.
It is officially stated that Messrs. Allan have applied to the Government for leave to make Halifux the winter terminate port, ceasing to go to Portland as formerly, and itis expected that the Government will avree to this, as their contract only refers t> carrying mails taken in conjunction with the recent announcement ef the termina tion of the arrangements between the A!lan and the Grand Trunk for through freight to England and the opening of the new ar- rangements between the Grand Tiunk and other Canadian lines instead. This siate- ment is significant. The making Halifax the winter port of the Ailan steamers will naturally bring the business via the Inter~ colonial.
An official telegram from the Colonial Office has been received approving of the form of the Canadian trophy of the Paris Exhibition. The construction of the trophy will now be proceeded with. shipped by the steamer ‘* Newfield.”’
