Gentlemen whe have just arrived from Manitoba state that the condition of thie Pembina Branch has been very much im- proved, and is now giving general satisfac- tion.

It is reportad that Her Royal Hightess the Princess Louise, before leaving for England, left instructions with the head carpenter at Rideau Hall to fall some trees in the grounds, and construct a regular backwoods shanty, including campboose, crane, aud the usual cooking apparatus, bunks, ete. It is intended as a curiosity.

SPEARING SALMON is now carried on to a reat extent in the salmon streams of this

rovince. We hear of four poachers who speared thirteen salmon at Winter River a few days ago. The Inspector of Fisheries should lose no time in prosecuting such of- fenders. If the practice is not immediately stopped, the good work of ve-stocking our rivers will be altogether vain.

A s.icut fire occurred to-day, in a tenement house, situated on Water street, opposite the tailway Freight House. It occurred by a spark falling from the chimney through a hole in the roof and igniting the coutents of a bed tick. It was extinguished before any damage was done to the house. ‘‘Silsby’ engine put in an appearance, but her services were not required.

H. Brown. The brigt. Elba cleared for Queenstown, G. B., to-day, with a cargo consisting of 25,300 bushels oats and 10,000 feet deals, seipeet by A. H. Yates. The bargt. M. J. Foley also cleared for Queenstown to-day, with 32,970 bushels oats, 400 pieces deals, 30 boxes preserved mutton, and 20 boxes preserved geese, shipped by P. Foley, The brig Peeress cleared for Nantes, France, yesterday, with 19,994 bushels oats and 350 pieces deals, shipped by R. F. Quirk.
