The procession started froin the Lodge Room, corner Kent and Price Streets, shortly after eleven and proceeded down Prince Street to Water, along Water to Queen, up Queen to Kent and along Kent tothe grounds. The music was furnished by the Artillery band. There was a large number of visitors to the city during the day,

SAD NEWS FROM HALIFAX,

Many Persons Drowned

Searching for the Bodies.

Hauirax, N. 8., July 11.

The town of Dartmouth, opposite Hali- fax, purchased the ferry steamer Annex 2, in Brooklyn, New York. She arrived at nine o'clock last night. The weather was gloriously fine, and thousands of people crowded the wharf to see her. There is a

vat eighteen feet long and ten feet wide which drops duwn on to the end of the ferry boat. This is regulated by a chain. The Annex did not come within three feet of the end of this float. The little passage way was packed with people, and the eflivers of the boat and chief of police warned the people to ‘keep off the float,” as it would never stand the strain. The people who were excited laughed at the oflicers and many attempted to jump from the float onto the deck of the boat. A moment later the chain snap- ped, the float fell twelve feet and from forty to sixty people, packed like sardines, were precipated into the water. Those at the edge of the fl ats fe:l head first and those behind them slid down on top of the more unfortunate ones. The water was twenty-five feet deep at this point and there was less than tive feet of space be- tween the piers of the wharf and the side of the wharf the people simply feil into a hole of deep water, and it was certain death for the undermust. The most indescribable confusion prevailed. Afver recovering from the momentary shock of consternation, the work of rescue commenced. Life presery- ers were thrown from the Annex. Pieces of wood lying on the wharf were pushed «ff! to the drowning ones, and fully a dozen people, including Alex. Lloyd, James Col- lins, J. Burbridge, D. Tait, Bill Fawson, and Wm Broadhurst, jumped into the water or climbed down the chains and commenced to bring out those in the water afluat ae by.
