Duffy Amphitheatre Fitting Location For

hh director of UPEI Theatre Society’s production of Lysistrata says there could not be a more fitting locale for presenting the timeless piece written by Aristophanes in the 5" century BC.

“Tt’s actually worked out quite well that we’re presenting it in Duffy; all the Greek classics were originally performed in amphitheatres, so it’s like getting back to our roots.” says Ashley Clark, the director and president of UPEI Theatre Society.

If you think it will be all Greek to you, fear not. Clark says the script has been edited to appeal to the average ear. Even if the script was kept intact, most of the jokes will not be lost in translation.

“We did do a little editing of the script to make it more accessible to the average person. We are aware that not everyone has a major in Greek studies, but there are a lot of jokes that you do not even need to hear to get, you just have to see. Although I did keep some references in for all the Greek nerds like me out there,” she explained.

While Clark says that the themes introduced in the Greek classic are timeless, some people may not appreciate the humour involved in the tale of women exerting their own sensual powers over their men. In a

nutshell, the women are getting so tired of the war between the Spartans and the Athenians, they refuse their husbands and boyfriends certbadn privileges. You don’t need to consult an oracle to know that excitement will ensue ... Yep, plenty of excitement.

The first-time director says she is anxious to see how this experience plays out for the cast and crew of 20+ people. What makes it more exciting for the neophyte director is the fact every member of the cast and crew have varied levels of theatre experience.

“It can be difficult getting organized, but the varied levels of experience make it fun too. This is a learning experience for everyone. That’s why we have the society. We don’t expect everyone to be experts in what they do right away, we just want them to learn and have a good time. I’m really looking forward to the shows though. They’re going to be awesome...and lots of fun.” she said.
