The Winter in Great Britain.

In Great Britain, a cheerless, chilly December was followed with a gloom- ier January, marked by a terrible snowstorm. Then camea February, which, aecordiag to one autherity, had not its fellow in discomfort during the last thirty years. It might be thought that with the second mouth of the year the worst had passed away, but those who looked for spring weather in March were disappointed sadly. Its entrance was truly lion-like, in veri- fication of the old weather adage. The first of the month had no sooner dawn- ed than avery deluge of snow broke forth all over the south and west of England. It was a first of March that Eaglishmen, Scotchmen and Welshmen will long remember as “the most hor- rible, the most cruelly exaggerated on record.” Snow feli in such quantities as to block all the railway lines north of York, and many trains, with their hapeless passengers, were snowed up. in the Highlands of Scotland,the havoc was fearful. Hundreds, perhaps thous- ands of sheep fell victims to the un- timely visitation. Work in many places was suspended. Families were imprisoned in their cottages, and wide- spread distress prevailed. Taking a survey of the whole season,Mr. Symons, an English weather student, says that for twenty seven years (and how much longer he cannot say) February was not so cold asthis year. The thermo- meter showed a fall of over one degree below the lowest value recorded since 1858. Norwasita few severe days that brought it thus down. The weather, on the contrary, was _per- sistently cold throughout. The far- mers have been sorely tried and will suffer in many ways from the conse. quences of the severe season.

Fooling the Doctor.

The other day a well known Detroit doctor was eating lunch in a restaurant alongside of a business man, when the latter remarked.

‘I just saw a case to interest you in the cigar store. Thereisa man there whohas no feeling at all io his right arm.’ ;

‘Case of paralysis, of course,’ replied the doctor.

‘Oh, no, itisn’t. He has been exam- ined by some of the most eminent sur- geons, and they declare it isn’t. If it was a case of paralysis he couldn’t move his arm, you know,’

How long hes it been so?

‘Over twenty years, he tells me. He says he'll pay any man $5,000 to re- store the natural feeling.’

‘l’ll see him,’ rem: arked the doctor, and when dinner was over the two went into the cigar store and the medical man was jotroduced.

‘Did this thing happen all at once asked the « doctor.

‘Yes, sir. There was no warning whatever.’

‘Does the arm feel dead ?

Perfectly dead. You can stick your knife into it without my feeling a sensa- tion.’

That’s odd. Let me feel of it.’

The doctor put outhis hand, made one grip, turned on his heel and left the place, his face as red as paint and his gait sgmewhat eccentric.

It was a wooden arm. The real one was shot off at Gettysburg.
