The Congress sat four hours to-day. It ratified the committees’ arrangements in re- gard to Batoum, and disposed of several questions of detail. The material portion of the work of Congress being herewith con- cluded, the reading of the Treaty of Peace was commenced, and the greater portion of it was read and agreed to. The Ango-Turk- ish convention was not mentioned. Lord Beaconsfield was absent, suffering from a sore throat.

Bern, July 10.

Nobeling was arraigned to-day on the charge of attempting qhe life of the Emper- or, and pleaded not guilty, maintaining that he only attempted to commit suicide. The city witnesses testified, however, that he aimed at the Emperor. He was sen- tenced to death.

Tue Telegraph says that Hon. E. B. Chandler is to be Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick. Mr. Chandler now holds a seat in the Legislative Council. The St. John Globe reports that, although 78 years of age, he isa man of wonderful activity for his years, and of great ability. He has been in public life for a long time ; and his elevation to the position of Governor of his native Province would be the fitting close of an eminent public career.

At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon, Michael Purcell appeared on complaint of his father—James Purcell—for assault. He was convicted on a charge of vagrancy for one month with hard labor, and atthe end of that time to find two sureties tokeep the peace towards his fa- ther for three months ; John Treanor,drunk and disorderly, was fined $3 and _ costs or 14 days, and two find two sureties to keep the peace, under penalty of six months’ im- prisonment; L. White, drunk and dis- orderly, was fined $2 and costs, or 8 days.

PR«LENTATION TO Mr. Bryan O’Lynnx.— Last night Mr. Bryan O’Lynn, of the Irish minstrels, who recently appeared in this city under the’ management of Mr. Healy, was made the recipient cf a blackthorn cane. On the head isa silver plate with “Erin Go Bragh” engraved on it, and a short distance below this another plate on which is inscribed the following:—‘‘Pre- sented to Bryan O’Lynn of the Irish mins- trels.” A deep silver ferule bears the fol- lowing names of the donors:—Prof. Harry Armstrong, John F. Lanley, Eugene Cole and Charlie Liley.” The company has now disbanded and leave for New York by

A Victoria British Columbia despatch says evidence before the Royal Commission disclosed an astounding state of corruption at Kootenay. Votes were bought openly at the polls; American citizens passed into Kootenay, took some sort of an oath before the magistrate, and controlled the election. Kootenay is situated on the southern boun- dary line, and has forty-five registered voters who return two members, one twelfth of the whole representation in the Local Parliament.

A Quebec despatch says that the bush fires continue to spread. The smoke was so dense in the St. Lawrence that steamers due at six yesterday morning only arrived at eight at night. A fire raging back of the Three Rivers ina swamp has already des- troyed a large portion of the branch shore road many miles long, only lately construct- ed and not yet changed over to the Govern- ment by thecontractors. THe Supreme Covurt.—The ejectment suit of Charles E. McKinnon vs. Hector McKinnon was finished this morning. The jury, after an absence of fifteen minutes,

aving returned a verdict in favor of the

laintiff for all the land claimed; E. J. lies and Neil McLeod for plaintiff; Peters and Palmer for defendant. By far the most interesting tzial that has engaged the attention of the Court for some years, was called on this morning. It is that of Miss Annie Mathewson, of Rose Valley, against W. McKinlay. The action is brought to recover damages for blighted love and affection. She alleges that being of a loving nature, she promised her hand and heart to the defendant; and that he, after holding them for over six years, threw ther over- board, and took to himself a wife in the person of anothe:young girl from the ‘‘Clas- sic Vales” of Sirathwtbyn. The Court Room is crowded with young men who appear to be anxious to acquire light on this subject. Theengagement having been

made in Gelic, the witnesses are, for the ost part, examined in that language. Mr. '

During a violent storm of wind and rain this afternoon, a small building near Stew- art’s mill was blown down, and a young lad lad named Wilkes, aged 9 years, while en- deavoring to escape from the wreck, was struck bya flying board and killed. The storm lasted about half an hour. It wasa splendid rain storm, doing a world of good and cooling the atmosphere. The thermo- meter had reached 98°.
