The main beach areas monitored show population fluctations over the 10 year period (Figure 2). However, numbers of Piping Plovers overall were up or steady by 1987. The public has appeared to be supportive of these restrictive measures and allowed the plover to nest relativly undisturbed by people.

The population of Piping Plover in the Crowbush - Lakeside area (Figure 3) especially the Crowbush colonv represents 25% of the Islands Piping Plover population. {tandowners in the area could provide greater protection to the plover during breeding seasonby following the management recommendations outlined on the Piping Plover poster and Ebhiribute significantly to the survival of the Piping Plover on Prince Edward Island.

USLAND NATURE TRUST UPDATE

Congratulations to the Island Nature Trust on its recent award from the Canadian Council on Ecological Areas. The Nature Trust was awarded the recognition based on their protection and management of natural areas on Prince Edward Island.

The Council gave the award to honor the Nature Trust's work in increasing public awareness and understanding of ecological areas, pre- serving and protecting such areas, and successfully lobbying government to assist in the protection of ecological areas.

The Canadian Council on Ecological Areas was established in 1982 to encourage the establishment of a nation-wide system of protected eco- logical areas. They held their annual meeting at UPEI in Charlottetown.
