A New York despatch says: An order has been received by the Winchester Arms Com- pany for fifteen to twenty million catridges for the Chinese Government. This is the first order ever given by the Chinese Government to foreigners for cartridges. It is rumored in trade circles that an immense number of guns has been made in England and shipped to China for use against the Rueaians.

A WoMAN disappeared from Reading, Penn., leaving the following note behind her: ‘‘ My Dear Hiusbaud: I left, in peace and joy. My body will be fonnd by some one. I had te do this, but, dear Lew, I had no ill feeling against you.” Dear Lew was greatly grieved until he feund ont that his dear wife was alive and well with another man in Philadelphia.
Terris_te Accipent.— On the night ef Tuesday, March 3rd, a young girl. named Anvie MeKay, a daughter of Mr. Angus Me- Kay, of Keppoch, Antigonish County, near the county line, was so badly burned by fall- ing into ap open fire place, that it is thought her injuries will preve fatal. She had arisen during the night for the purpose of warmiag herself, and, while standing near the fire, which was burning in one of these large open fire-places, commonly seen in farmers’ houses, was sezed with a fit, and fell on the embsrs. Whon assistance was rendered by the other members of the family, the poor girl was found to be shockingly burned. Her suffer ings since have been heartrending, and death would be welcomed by her friends. — Picton Standard,
Says the St. John Sun:—‘‘It will be good news to all who wish well to the Intercolonial
Railway to learn that the quantity ef freight passing over the road, in all directions is quite remarkable. The business revival has thrown avast amount of traffic ou the read and the rolling steck is taxed to its utmost capacity. We hear of there beimg nearly one hnndred ears of freight at Campbellton at one time, afew daysago. On Saturday last seventeen special trains passed over the road. The re- duction of the rates of freight on lumber has given an impetas to the movement of deals and timber, especially in Nova Scotia, giving millers and merchants an epportunity to get their wood te market so as to take advantage ef the recent advance.
