Now that contract bridge, along with almost everything else. has become more and more scientific, it may be wise to observe that pure science is not always the best approach. Take the matter of slam bidding. In most cases, of course. it is only sensible to investigate controls, but sometimes "science" should be suppressed in the inter- est of a considered risk,
