Boston, Sept 25. Porarors.—The market was over-sup- plied and very dull during the first part of the week, but the low prices checked ship- ments somewhat and with lighter receipts forthe past three days, the market has been working into better condition. At the close there is a moderate demand for choice sound eastern stock at the roads at 40 to 45c.

Fisu.—A very good demand is reported for mostall kinds of fish and prices are generally well sustained. Codtish keep well sold up at full quotations. Herring in steady demand. Mackerel in moderate supply and a shade firmer.

Presbyterianism in P. E. Island. r oe ee

According to a correspondent of the Presbyterian Witness, ‘‘it appears that there are in this} Province 33 Presbyterian congregations, and that 30 of these have settled ministers. Of the 5,891 communi- cants, 611 were added during the past year. Ten years ago there were but 25 churches and 3,672 communicants. Ten years ago the total amount given for all purposes was $29,161, while for the past year it has been $46,468. There are only two congregations—St. James's, Charlotte- town and Summerside—that give more than two dollars tothe schemes per com- municant; while 21 give less thau one dol- lar. This may partly be accounted for by the Augmentation scheme in absorbing all the resources of the weaker congregations. My memory carries me back to a time when there was avery different state of things. Such is the affect of union and organization and the lesson should not be lost upon Presbyterians in P. E. Island and elsewhere.”

Newark, N. J., Sept. 25.—Eleven people are dead and thirty wouuded as the result of a bom explosion at the Italian celebration of the feast of St. Rocco last night. The bombs were filled with colored fire and shot into the air from a mortar, when hundreds of men, women and children were around. Nearly allthe dead and most of the injured are children, and all but one or two reside in Newark. Others will probably die. The

The Best Society.

The so-called ‘** best society” is full of deceit and hypocrisy and sin. The really best society is made up of cultured Chris- tians. It is cultured. That word is not defined by a smattering of poor French and music, a bit of fancy work, or the latest sensational novel. It means ground ploughed up, soil broken and mellowed, fertilized and fruitful. Such is the mean- ing of the supine cultum of the Latin verb celo. Thus a cultured man is one who, by diligence and patience and hard work, has broken up, mellowed and strengthened his nature util he is self-possessed, disciplined and fruitful. He has studied and acquired and appropriated until he knows. He pus- sesves experience and virtue, strength and wisdom, and uses them, impelled by the motive of love, for his own and his neigh- bor’s character building. Culture is not the waltz or the euchre pack or the whist party, the gambling parlor, the opera, or the cup of wine. Nor is it found in per- tumes, satins, lace handkerchiefs, or airs. Neither is it mere wealth or position, for these may easily be had by deceit and inor- dinate presumption. Culture never comes except through the media of effort, and sacrifice, and diligence.

Now, if you add to ths true culture Christianity, you have the very best society. Mind, we are not speaking of the ignorant professor of religion who simply prates of his goodness. For him we hope we have charity, but with him we have little sympathy. We refer to the strung, substantial, matter-of- fact, aspiring Christian, who knows in whom he believes and, ‘*.iving ail diligence, adds to his faith knowleiye, cour«ge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and love.” He lives well, enjoys life, wears a smile, rests in the certainty of his religion and in the truthfulness and triauph of his faith. He pays his debts, gives honest re- muneration to others, is broad, liberal, straightforward and pious. A man of deep conviction, loyalty to truth and strong pur- pose, he loves God and his fellowmen and dares to witness his experience. Such a man is the Christain of our theaght. He is a maa of flesh aud blood, enjoys good health, eats three meals a day, unde.stands himself in business and political life, and lives right down here among men, if we are not blinded by prejudice, or by that sickly sentiment which expects Christianity to whitewashed fools, we can easily find him. There are thousands of him, and we bless him in the name of God and humanity and heaven. If you like him, you had better keep him company. }

Russia, which claims absolute supremacy over the region, has forbidden the English | Captain Younghusband to enter the Little Pamir in Central Asia. Captain Young- husband is one of the best known of orien- tal travellers. He has made the longest journey in Chinese territory ever accom- plished by a European unless Marco Polo beat him. His journey from Manchuria to East Turkestan was about 6,000 miles long. He has also written one of the best known books on Siam. It was recently an- nounced that the purpose of his present expedition was to make new explorations in Thibet. The Pamir is on the border of the Chinese possession of East Turkestan. Pamir means ‘‘the roof of the world,” and the Pamir plateau is the loftiest on earth. Little Pamir is in the south-east part of this territory, and here rises the chief head waters of the Amu Darta, or the ancient Oxus river. itis likely that Russia does not so much object to Younghusband’s pre- sence in the Pamir as to his passing through that country on the way to Thibet, where the Russians seem anxious to monopolize the work of exploration.

Can You Dress a Doll?

The Queen wishes a largenumber of dolls dressed for its Poor Children’s Christmas Tree for 1891, and in order to interest girls and young ladies to assist in this work, they offer a Prize Doll Competition to those who dress a dcll for the purpose. This competition is open to girls under sixteen years of age, residing in Canada or the United States, duplicate prizes being given for each country. The Queen furnishes the dolls, charges prepaid. They are to be dressed and returned before December Ist, 1891.

The cash prizes of each $50, $25 and $15 and many other prizes of value will be given for the best dressed dolls, according to merit. Send ten three-cent stamps, and receive, charges prepaid, one full-bodied imported Doll, a lithograph plate illus- trating ten dressed dolls in colors, and three months’ trial subscription to the Queen.

Sea, Fisuine — Advices from British Columbia place the total catch of seal teken in Behring Ses this season by Canadian vessels at 12,009, against 18,000 skins last year. Sir Julian Pauncefote has protested to the State Department at Washington against the violation of the modus vivendi by United States vessels by taking seal in excess of the maximum limit thereby prescribed (7,500), while.British vessels hive captured nearly twice that number.
