No one In a legitimate taxi business can operate a taxi busi- ness here on 25 cents fare, stated Mr. Acorn. He said it meant cut- ting down the number of em- ployees. in his case from 23 to ll. Only about two taxis are left in the City as operators. he stat- ed. the rest were turned over to the drivers. The drivers buy their own cars and he feared that the expenses were so high that every taxi cab in Charlottetown would he owned by the car dealers in 12 months.

Coun. Gormley brought up the matter of people coming in from the country and operating a taxi during the winter and Old Home Week. Mr. Acorn stated that this was the case and that all these people had to do was pay It 315 license for and go into business tluring the plush periods.

The Council gave a notice of motion to deal with the matter and decided to meet with all taxi drivers in Charlottetown concern- ing the matter.

A temporary revised rate was put into effect some time ago but in number of the operators re- turned to the old prices.

Montague Club Plans-for Summer Activities

-The annual meeting of the Montague Men's Club of Trinity United Church was held last night at the A. D. MacKenz.le Hall, with the president, Mr. Lorne Wlgglnton, presiding. There were thirty members present.

Following an , the members were led in a sing-song by the president.

During the business meeting plans were discussed for keeping the club in, operation during the summer months. and the enter- tainment committee wss appoint- ed to arrange-picnics during this

period.

The treasurer reported a suc- cessful financial year.

Mr. Lorne Wlgginton was again elected as president for his third

consecutive term. Other officers include, vice - president. K e I r Clark; secretary, Doug Coffin;

treasurer. Cecil Beck; Mr. John A. MacNair. Charlottetown. was elected as patron.

A vote of thanks was extended Mr. Wigglnton for the generous donation of his time. and his un- censlng efforts on behalf of the Men's Club.

The evening closed with films depicting scenes from Montague and vicinity shown by Dr. L. A. Johnston. .

Captain Angus Brown wound up his ice patrol: yesterday after what he termed a "freak year". in which then was little ice but what there was took a long time to clear. . I ,.

He reported that both the Northumberland Strait and the Gulf of St. Lawrence were free of ice -and that fishermen would have the all-clear for the open- ing of the ' ' season today.

Closing date of the ice patrols this year are the second " t on record. The earliest. was 1949 when he wound up his patrols on April 26. in contrast last year's patrol on May 13 was the latest in six years.

Captain Brown reported that he had an easy season this year as he only made 17 patrols in comparison to 29 a year ago.
