CHILDHOOD.

O, that I Could once nrore behold My infancy and youth !

“'hcn every thing that shone was gold, And every story, truth.

I loved the fields—l loved the grove-— I loved the azure sky-

And all the shining orbs above— And all the clouds on high.

I loved to see the mountain wave As it roll’d o’er and o'er ;

I loved to see the sea fowl love, And hearthe ocean’s roar.

I loved the bee that every hour \Vould buzz along the air,

As he came laden from the flower That bloomed so gay and fair.

I loved the birds that glided o’er The woodlandand the plain,

And turned theirplaintive notes before The cottage ofthe swain.

I loved the cattle on the bill— In pastttres green and lair ;

I loved the clear and purling rill, And mottled fishes there.

l loved mankind, and ever strove \Vith all my heart to please ;

For childhood’s soul is full oflove, Tillage th' afl'ections freeze.

In all I loved,l learned to trace My Father’s image there,

\Vho guarded all my helpless days, And fortned tny thoughts in prayer.

VARIETIES.

A philosopher stepped on board a ferry boat to cross a stream; on his passage he inquired of the ferryrnan if he understood arithmetic. The man looked astonished. “Arithme- tic ! No Sir, I never heard ofit he- tore.” The philosopher replied, “ I am very sorry, for one quarter ofyour life is gone.” A few minutes after, he asked the ferryman, “ Do you know anything of mathematics?” The boatman smiled, and replied “No.” “ Well, then,” said the philosopher. “ another quarter ofyour life is gone.” A third question was asked the ferry- rnan, ” Do you understand astrono- my?” “Oh! no, Sir, never heard of such a thing.” ” \Vell, my friend, then another quarter of your life is gone.” Just at this moment the boat ran on a snag, and was sinking, when the l'errymanjumped up, pulled ofl‘ his coat, and asked the philosopher, with great earnestness of manner, “ SIR, CAN YOU swm !” “No,” said the philosopher. “ Well, then,” said the ferryman, “voUR WHOLE Lira Is now, for the boat’s going to the bot- tom.”

If a man be gracious and courteous to strangers, itshows he isa citizen of the world, and that his heart is no island cut ofl'l‘rorn other hearts, but a continent that joins them.
