It is learned that two vessels sighted the Alpera, 30 to 50 miles off Racine on Satur- day forenoon, and another picked up her step ladder and a pail marked Alpera, at Holand, Michigan. Tugs have been sent on the lookout along the Michigan coast. The telegraph lines north of Manistee are alldown. The articles ‘found may have been washed overboard, and the owners are confident that the vessel will be found to have reached port. The captain was Nelson W. Napier, of St, Joseph. The crew. numbered 25 persons, and the pass- engers 60 or 70.

t is stated that D. R. Riddell, local freight agent of the Michigan Southern Railroad, has left town with a shortage in his accounts of $50,000, which are switch- ing fees, collected, but notepaid over.’

WasHINGTON, Oct. 19.

Information has been received at the War Department that Scout Allison, who had been to Sitting Bull’s camp, returned to Fort Keogh, and states that Sitting Bull said he had been deceived as to the position of the Canadian Government by Major Walsh. His Indians, as soon as they learned of this deception, became very in- dignant and demonstrative. Sitting Bull is inclined to peace with the United States, but says that owing to the dread his follow- ers had of the United States troops he could not promise their surrender. hewever, to advance towards Fort Keogh by three circuit routes, and if his Indians were not molested by the troops they would con- sider the United States Government friend- ly towardsthem. No action will be taken by the authorities on this information, as it is thought Sitting Bull is only trying to get an excuse for follewing butialo as they come south.

This morning the county authorities took action in regard to the prosecution of trainsmen, found guilty by a corener’s jury of criminal negligence in causing the ac- cident on the Pennsylvania railroad, at twenty-eighth street crossing Oct. Yth. Proceedings are against John Routh, con- ductor, William J. Penrod, flagman, of first train, and engineer Hughes, of second train. Commonwealth will likely bring

charges of murder.

Torat DISASTERS IN SEPTEMBER. — The number of vessels belonging to, or bound to or from ports in the United States, reported totally lost and missing during the last menth is 36, of which 25 were wrecked, 3 abandoned, Ll. burned, 1 sunk by collision, 3 foundered, and 3 are missing. The list comprises 5 stear- ers, 3 ships, 9 barques, 6 brigs and 13 schoon- ers, and their total value, exclusive of cargoes, is estimated at $1,090,000, The following belonging to Colonial ports:—Ship Paul Boynton (of Yarmouth), from Baltimore for Hamburg, wrecked; barque Capri (of Maitland) from Hamburg for New York, do, schr Lizzie and Emma (of P EJ), from Norfolk for King- sten, Ja, burned.
