was found for the defendant, was granted.

An application was made to set aside some verdicts recovered on promissory notes drawn previous to the passing of tho present Stamp Act, on the ground that the notes were not stamped as required by law. It seems that section 4 of the Act requires that ‘‘upon aad in respect of every promissory note, draft or bill of ex- ehange for an amount not leas than Twenty- five dollars, made, drawn or accepted in Canada previous to and from and after the passing of this Act, there shall be levied, eollocted and paid,” ete. Other sections declare that notes not stamped according to the provisions of the Act should be ‘‘invalid and of no effect in law er in equity.” It was contended that all netes, no matter when they were made, should, therefore, be stamped,and if they were not, they were of no use. The three Judges, however, were of opinion that, as the old Stamp Aci did not apply on this Island, it would be unreasonable to suppose that the Legislature ever intended that the new one should have a retrospective effect, and apply to notes that were drawn years be- fore the passing of the present Stamp Act. Whatever might be the case in the other Provinces, they were clearly of opinion that that part of the Act did not extend to this Province. ‘They, therefore, refused to disturb the verdicts

After the Supreme Court adjourned on Saturday evening, the Court of Chancery was opened to hear an application for a special injunction, at the suit of E. W. Taylor anc’ George H. Taylor against Johu F. McKay It appears that McKay was doing business as a watchmaker and jewele1 on the North Side of Queen Square, Charlotte. town ; and intending to leave the Island, sold his business and good will to the Taylors. McKay then went away, but a short time afterwards returned-and re opened a watch- making ani jewelry shop in Charlottetown. This the Messrs, Taylor cousidered was against the terms of their purchase, and they put the matter inte Chancery, and asked for an injunction to restrain McKay from carrying on his business. Mr, Davies appeared for the

laintiffs, and Mr. Peters for the defendant.
