A regrettable} ipsurrection, which can only bring} disastrous consequences for Canada,has broken out in the Northwest territory, | and poor misguided men, forgetting the teachings of our holy religion, ipstead | of continuing to claim by legal and} constitutional means the examination | aud redress of their real or supposed | grievances, have risen up in arme| ugainst the established authority apd | take the law into their own hands, | Evidently this is a state of things which no government can tolerate, and it is absolutely necessary that the majesty of the law be affirmed and _ protected. Unhappily, blood has already flown in an engagement between the insurgents and the officials of the country, and our government has been compelled to call | to arms a certain number of men trom different parts of the Dominion. All have responded to the call with ad- mirable promptitude, showing that the | old courage ot the Canadian people has | not altogether been extinguished. We have, dear bretheru, the satisfaction of knowing,if any ofthe people in this diocese are required to aid in the de fence of their country,that each will do his duty nobly,and will understand that there lies upon him an obligation to per- form his part bravely.
