Speculation on the Result.

Toronto, Jan. 28.

A great deal of interest is felt in the _re- sult of the elections te-day in Halton, Kingston and Lincoln. The Government supporters appear to be quite confident of carrying Lincoln, which will be a gain, Gib. -on, Grit, having been returned at the general election by a majority of forty. In Halton matters are 4 little complicated, vwing to the uncertainty of the atrength of the Patrons of Industry, whose candidate has been endorsed by the Grits. However, Henderson, the unseated Conservative candidate, appears to be rallying the full party vote, aud should pull through all right. Private despatches from Kingston indi- cate Metcalf’s probable return.

Stocks in the States. During the past week, there has been, says Henry Clews, what may be considered « healthy break in the stock market. A combination of influences has favored the disposition of the ‘‘bears” to make a de- monstration in force against the ‘‘buil” side. The situation of our relations with Chili has been made lurid with war puint, and the pens of rumor-mongers have been dipped in ensanguined ink, as accompani- ments of sensational assaults on the ‘*bull” position. Simultaneously, the disagree- ment between Mr. Gould and the Western Traffic Association was distorted and ex- aggerated into shapes calculated to excite apprehensions of a wide-spread freight war;

The still unsettled differences as to apportionment of pro- duetions between the anthracite corpora- tions was also made to play an influential part in the tactics of attack. There was enough material in this combination of circumstances to back a reasonable extent of selling, and it was skillfully used by the ‘*bear” leaders fol- lowed by the rank and file. A vigorous demonstration made on Tuesday resulted ina decline of 14 to 3 pointa through- out the list. This success, however, developed an excess of ‘‘shurt’’ salesandthe discovery of the dangerously oversold condition of the market caused, on the following day, a rally to about the range of prices from which the decline started. This movement has served # useful purpose. As a trial of force between the two sides, it has demonstrated that the *‘bulls” have not yet lost all their advantege. As a test of confidence, it shows that there are buyers ready to take whatever stock the ‘“‘bear’ traders may throw at them at tempting prices. As a symptom of the general spirit of the market, it shows the permancacy of the “bull” element, a disposition to continue to hold rather than weariness of holdiag, and a preponderant expectation of a boom later on.

I. P. McCoubrey, L. P. Tanten, A. DesRoches and D. Me- Kenaie.
