I took an early opportunity of telling Alice that it was time for me to go back home, my father would be wanting me. She received my information as unemo- tionally as she had taken everything else that day.

Dinner was over early, and as scon as we left the dining room I hurried around to the brewery, hoping that the revela- tions that I had to make concerning the previous night would make the night guard more vigilant.

It was still almost broad daylight, be- ing scarcely eight o’clock, when I came upon Higgins, with his pipe in his mouth.

‘“‘Mr. Higgins,’’ I began, “I wish you would trust me inore than you do.”’

For reply he took his pipe out of his mouth, and said, briefly :—

‘Trust you? Now does the missus? By what I can ‘ear of the goings on in the ‘ouse, it’s all you and Mr. Jones, you and Mr. 'Arry, and the mistress ont of it all, just as if she was only a child and not a growed up woman and her own missus.’’

‘Don’t you know,’ I said, ‘‘that Miss Clarke has not been herself lately, owing to the night frights she has had? It does not say much for your watchfulness that anyone was able to get in and give them to her,’’ I went on, boldly.

“Who do you think it was gave to bert’’ he said, after a pause.

‘*Well that strange woman had a hand in it, I know,’’ I said, decidedly. ‘‘And last night, after all I said to you, you let her get in again, and she tried to smother Miss Clarke during the night.”’

“Did she, though?’’ said Higgins. “You are sure it wos her, I s’pose,’’ he remarked, with another sidelong look.

“Why, yes; who else could it be?’’ said I.

‘‘And the missus—what does she think?

P’raps she’s a coming to ask my opinion too."’ He was looking behind me toward the gate of the yard. Turning my head, I saw to my astonishment that Alice was indeed coming toward us, with the same cold, suspicious expression which she had worn ail day. Instinctively I fell back a little, and Alice smiled contemptuously as she noticed this. . You can go on talking,’ she said, dryly, as she came up, ‘“‘for I’ve come about the same subject. There has been @ great mystery about some doings which have taken place here lately,’’ she began. ‘*My household and my friends seem to have sifted it thoroughly, only I have been left in the dark. Perhaps you can throw a little light on it for me, too?’’

‘"P'raps I could, ma’am,’’ he said, with his eyes on the ground, ‘but p’raps I won’t. There, that’s flat, ain’t it?’’

‘‘Don’t you think that, as the mistress, I have a right to know what goes on here?”’

“Right or no right, ma'am, I ain’t agoin’ to tell you what I knows about this job; not if you was to turn me off to-morrow. I ain’t agoin’ to break a lady’s ’eart what has been a good mis- tress tome, and it would go nigh to breaking yours if you was to know ali I know or guess,’’ he added ina low voice,

Alice said nothing for a few momenta. She could not fail to be impressed by the sincerity of the man’s manner.

‘Tell Miss Clarke about the woman; tell her there has been a woman about,”’ I pleaded, earnestly. Alice looked in- terested at once.

‘“‘A woman?’’ she repeated. ‘‘The wom- an I want to see, perhaps, Is it a tall, good-looking woman who dresses quiet- ly? Is she about now?’’

“She's sure to be, sure to be,’’ I broke in, hastily. ‘‘She was here last night, she’s always here; and she hides about so that you either cannot or will not find her.’’

“I haven't seen her, I give you my word,’’ grumbled Higgins. ‘‘But I don’t say it’s easy to keep watch over eve'g nook and cranny in this ’ere big ramb ling place.’”’

**Welll” I said, boldly, ‘‘you had bet ter keep a watch cn the door between the house and the works to-night unless Miss Clarke would like to have another attempt made on her life."’

Both my hearers started at this speech, Alice presently held out her hand with a commanding gesture.

“Give me the key of that door,’’ she said, decisively. The night watchman took a key from his bunch and gave it to her.

“I can go through to the house by that Way pow,”’ she said.

And bidding us both good night, she passed through into the brewery build- ing. Higgins slowly followed her as far as the staircase, and stood looking at her with a half-puzzled, half-pitying expres- sion of countenance.

Finding myself thus turned to the honse.

In the hall I met one of the maids, who told me that Mr. Lloyd was in the drawing room.
