ant in a prohibition case was award- ed six months in jail, it being a sec- ond offence. A young man, charged with being drunk and disorderly, was given two months. The lad who tried to shortchangc the proprietor of a Chinese restaurant, and in the alter- cation which ‘ensued raised a distur- bance, chasing the proprietor and his helper cutinto the street with a but- cher knife was givcn two months in jail.

Prince of Wales To Abandon Sport

LONDON, Feb. 11-The Express today says that the Prince of Wales has decided to bandon hunting and point-to-point racing and will sell all nu hunters. His decision was ms to be due to his rapidly increasing duties in consequence of the illness of his father. It was understood that the sale would take place in Leicester in about a fortnight. The newspaper, however, implied that the prince does not intend to abandon his favorite sport permanently saying that he is giving it up for the time being. The next thing to do was to ap-

He felt that, if the right man were selectedas secretary, he could work in with the road builders, and more valuable information could be added in this way. ' The chairman pointed out that one of the things which should induce motorists to belong to the_ association was the fact that such a league would be a between the motorists and the Government. The Govern- ment is always ready to receivereas- enable suggestlons—if they come from an authorized source. The head- quarters of the Club would be apiece where information might be had as regards the condition of the different roads.

Mr. A. A. Pomeroy then moved that a Motor League organization be for- med, and that a resolutions commih tee be appointed.

The chairman suggested that there should be a President, and a vice pre- sident for each county on the execut- ive and an executive committee of three. He felt that the suggested re- solutions commlttee should have pow- er to nominate these.

This was included in Mr. Pomeroy's motion, which was duly seconded. Mr. L. P. Tanion, speaking to the motion, said there were two interests to be served—-that of the motor own- er,‘and that of the Province. He felt that Mr. (Brady's suggestion was a good one that they should be able to supply legal advice, and tell members that, if they were brought before the courts unjustly the league would de- fend them. but that if they were in the wrong they could not expect the backing of the league. He contended that the motor laws should be made plainer. Some amendment should also be made to the Motor Vehicle Act to provide that any competent chauf- feur should be permitted to drive. a ta‘ wners car.

‘Mr. Gordon Hughes who had been on the executive of the Motor Leag- ue, spoke of the difficulties they had experienced in arousing interest in the Association. From lack of this interest, the league had gradually faded away. He called attention to the fact that, at the border, when cars were crossing into the ‘United States, all a motorist had ‘to do was to show his league membership card. and he was passed without further trouble. So the league had had the responsibility on it of seeing that re- liable persons were admitted to mem- bership. He wished the league every success in its proposed re-organiza- tion.

The chairman suggested that the nominating and resolutions commit- tees consist of seven members, to be composed as follows:

Of these, Mr. Webster was presi- dent of the former league, and m. Hughes had been on the executive. The chairman commented on the unsatisfactory nature of the taxi fees here, stating that taxi men some- times tock advantage of visitors. It was _time that something was done to protect the travelling public in the summer. when taxi-owners would charge $2.00 per hour per person for four people in a car, it was really a little too thick.

Mr. Gaudet pointed out some of the duties of the proposed associa- tion. He charged inaccuracy in the lan- guage placed ln the mouth of the Governor-General when the speech said a deputy minister of fisheries had been appointed in accordance with the recommendation of the flsh- eries commission. but this appoint- ment had been made before the fish- eries report was issued. Why not a reduction to one cent in the carriage charge on mail in Canada, asked Mr. Bennett in commenting on the re- duction of the two cent , to other parts of the empire. The board of railway commissioners no longer had the respect of the people of Canada, it had been charged. This because men had been 5,, inted to it who were not fitted for the position. They were not well enough equipped in knowledge, and ability.

The Cons] ative leader condemn- ed the statement in the throne speech that the flow of immigrants was commensurate with the require- ments of Canada. The immigration returns did not take into account the immigrants who returned to the old country. All but 1878 of the miner harvesters had gone but out of the 8,000 who came. Of those who re- turned 4000 had to be helped. Tile government had to appease various classes. The Conservatives when they came to power would deal with immi- gration seriously.

Seven years had gone by since the Prime Minister had first said in a speech from the throne that the question of the natural resources of the western provinces would be dealt with. How would the people of Que bec like it if their resources were p treated like thatil, asked Mr. Bennett. There must be equality of treatment accorded the western provinces. The speech from the throne was a damn- ing indictment of the government in the matter of resources, Mr. Ben- nett said.
