STUDENT UNION MEETING
MARIAN HALL (CPS) -— Sunday evening, October 22, the Student Union Council of the University of Prince Edward Island held one of its most historic meetings. With
many controversial topics . on the agenda and attendance at an all—time high, the I S.U. Council almost succeeded in achieving its purpose. I ' Evidence of this, and def— initely the highlight of | the evening, was the defeat (yes, that is right - I defeat) of a motion put ' forward by two members of
the executive. Well, I actually, what happened
as that the Council I members decided they wanted
to vote on a motion concern— I ing Radio U.P.E.I. now

Coughlin, Marion MacEachern, Linda Lidstone, Bill MacIntyre and David Curley.
Getting down to brass tacks, though, we were quite im— pressed by the range of topics ' covered, the decisions made, and the short period of time covered by the meeting. Most ' of the credit for this must be given to Rosemary Curley who quite adequately chaired ' the meeting. A resume of the proceedings follows: .‘
BUSINESS MANAGER: It was stated that "many students" were in favour of hiring a Business Manager, depending on his role. It was moved then, that the Student Union look into hiring a, I full—time Business Manager
who would act in an advisory capacity only, cheques being signed by the Treasurer. It was pointed out that this could I provide some financial stability from one Student Union to the next and would also eliminate the position of Comptroller and External Vice President. The de- cision was unanimous.

OMBUDSMAN: 'In continuing its
move toward stabilizing the functions of the I
Student Union, the Council MARITIME STUDENT UNION, I CONFERENCE :,
again discussed the ques- tion of the missing and
much maligned position
of Ombudsman. It was decided that this position i must be filled immediately and, therefore, nomina— tions were opened. Three names were entered: ' Richard O'Brien, George Mitchell and Earl Acorn. l After a short description
of each nominee was given, the Council voted and O'Brien was elected hands down. We would like to congratulate' the Student Union Council
for their wisdom. However, RADIO u,P.E.I.: Mike anfy,
since Richard was the Managing Editor of the Cadre and one of its most I conscientious members,
'this leaves us in a bit of
a fix. The newspaper will I suffer but we hope that
the Student body will | benefit from this devel— opment, as we know Richard O'Brien will do his ut— | most to fill the role of troubleshooter on behalf

It was suggested by President Pat Duffy ' that U.P.E.I. host a conference of Student
Union Executive from the
Maritime Provinces who have been discussing the possibility of closer cooperation with each other and even forming some sort of association. This conference is to be held November 17 to 19. The motion to host this conference was carried

IBUDGET: It was revealed that the Student Union budget. will be released soon, after clarification of certain minor details.
|0THER AFFAIRS: 'There was also quite a bit of discussion on the up-coming Open House, the insurance issue exams on Election Day, the situation concerning Pig 'n Whistle and Course Evaluation. Of course, the most heated debate of the whole meeting centered
director of Radio U.P.E.I presented the council with a proposal that is intended to improve the operation of the radio station. He pointed out that, as it now exists, the radio station does not reach Bernadine or Marian Hall and is very unreliable in Memorial Hall. However, he pointed out that this_: would be expensive and‘ ,would run about $3,000' over the radio's budget. After defeating a motion to.table for further consideration the Council‘ voted to accept this proposal and another motion to close down the radio station until this new system is in operation which is expected to be after Christmas sometime.
