From small beginnings Hanover Shoe Farms has become the great- est Standard Bred horse nursery in the world. We had the pleasure of listening to Lawrence B. Shep- pard. President of the U.S.T.A.. telling about his early days spent at the farms and the instructions his father gave him which were of great value. The old gentleman was very proud some years ago when his thirteen-year-old grand- daughter drove Dean Hanover to a world's three-year-old trottiiip re- zord against time-158'-'.-. Business enterprises in which the Sheppards and Mr. Myers are interested are Hanover Shoe Company, manufac- 'urers of shoes and operators of retail stores throughout the United States.

During the present year 29 miles have been trotted or paced in 2.00 in better with 20 of them in races and all but two have been the performances of pacers. The lone trotting representative was Star's Pride. Fourteen horses are cred- ited with the 20 miles. nine oi them newcomers to the top racing brackets. Sampson Hanover 4. 156 4-5 is the leader with four such miles. three of them in races. Dudley Hanover. Prince Jay and Good Time have each raced a trio of miles in the 2.00 bracket. Tar Heel and Tassel Hanover are ilso credited with three even time niles. two in races.

One of the biggest racing dis- ippointments this season is the irotter Mahlon Hanover that took I record of 2.04 as a twb-year-old at Lexington last fall and on the itrength of his winter training in Florida. he was made the favorite h the winter book to win the Hambletonian, the richmt harness horse stake. Joe O'Brien. who has trained and driven him ever since a. yearling. was quite high on him when they left Florida but as the racing season progressed he did not come up to expectations although he did win in 2.06 over Roosevelt half-mile track and also won a number of .other events Joe or the veterinarians could not get at the seat of the trouble but it finally became known that his' sight. was failing and when he was told at Lexington a. week ago he aad gone totally blind and brought only 3150. The owner had refused in offer of 830.000 for him last Cpring.

The Bill Gallon 3. 1.59'i colts urd fillies are showing up mighty veil this season and there is no loubt but that he will be one of the coming sires. At Lexington Honor Bright lowered the season's record for trotting mares to 2.00 I-5 against time. She is the prop- erty of David Johnston. the man whose father. the late Horace Johnston. owned Bill Gallon.

Scottish Pence p. 1.57 4-5 has been retired to the stud at Cas- tleton Farm, Lexington. Ky. His winnings at the end of this sea,- son totalled 3145.879. Scottish Pence is by Scotland and his dam is Millie Worthy by Guy Axwor- thy. also the dam of Anti-Aircraft- 2.03. He established two world's records at Roosevelt Raceway this season when he paced one and one-half miles in 3.06 and two miles in 4.13 2-5. He made his record of 1.57 4-5 at Lexington and took a half-mile track record of 2.01 1-5 at Delaware. Ohio. track. It! 1950 he won 22 of his 26 starts and won seven races. was five times second and twice third in 1951. His trainer said that he was the kind of horse all horsemen want. He had great speed. a lot. of sense and perfect manners. He required no special handling, used very few bandages or leg wash and his feet and logs were the very best.

It was Sep Palin who first be- came interested in him when as a three-year-old he won seven starts. was four times second and twice third and took a mark of 2.03 3-5. Palin bought him for Casfleton Farm string and raced him with success as a four-year-old in 1940. giving him a record of 2.02 4-5. As a five-year-old he set up his mark of 1.57 4-5. won 22 races and earned 372.387. The balance of his winnings were made this

Mr. Murphy spent scme days visiting the stock terms at Lexington and as one writer put it. used the same formula which had made him the sports first trainer when he retired- bought what he liked regardless of price. He had the last bid on the top yearling of the sale. Gosling. paying 355.000 for him. s15.000 for Kimberly Kid. 525,000 for Rocket Express. s5.700 for Jassymitc. all by Voiomitc. and Lord Victory by Victory Song 1.57-H. which he bought from Castleton Farm con- signment for 321.000, a total for the five of 5121.700.

Mr. Murphy has always been partial to Walnut Hall yeatiings. in 1009 he lowered a worldls re- cord which had stood for eighteen years and was made bv Arion in 1891 in Califoi-nia-2.1015; for a two-year-olci trottcr. It was Native Belle by Moko that he reduced that record with at Lexington to 2073.. Still later with another two-vear-old which was bred at the Patchen Wilkes Farm and was a son of Peter the Great 2.03"-'.v he cut that record to 2.04'-.-. That was the redoubtablc Peter Volo that set up a world's record as a year- ling of 2.19.

In 1914 Peter Volo with Murphy U1. reduced the world's thrce-,vear- old trotting record to 2.0315; and the foiir-year-old record to 2.02 For years Murphy dominated the Grand Circuit racing and he had almost unerring judgment in buy- ing coils and aged horses. He took over Peter Manning when he was thought to be just 8 freak horse that would not go the route and gave him the world's trotting re- cord of 1.56"; and also the world's trotting record over a half-mile track of 2.02. Both have since been lowered.

Old-timers will remember when he bought the trotter Peter Scott from Walter Cox. paying 050.000 for him. Cox laughed and said ”He'll be a long time getting that back." but the next year Murphy won most of it back. making a clean sweep of the big stakes on the Grand Circuit. Peter Scott is the sire of Scotland. the sire of so many of the great performers rac- ing today. s

A series of bad accidents was the cause of Murphy quitting the racing game at the end of the season of 1934. Without doubt he knew more about training. balan- cing and buying trotters and pac- ers than any man in recent years. The horses that have been purch- ased for Mr. Buck by him have been turned over to Jimmie Jor- dan. a modest type of trainer who has had a,lot of success this sea- son at Roosevelt Raceway.

We wonder whether Mr. Murnhv will superintend or lay out a line of instructions for developing this high priced quintette. It certainly must be a worry to a trainer to be responsible for that kind of youngsters getting to the flicks and earning a substantial part of the investment.

Another big surprise at Le'xing- ton was the renewal of a racing combination which had dominated the harness horse world for fifteen years-E. J. Baker. owner of the famous Greyhound 1.55V . Sep Palln. the man who drove him to so many records. and his assistant Jimmie Winglleld. "Of course its too early yet to say how well stack up. but we'll be in there." he said as he unlaced a skate. Querled about the addition of Bob Gray and Conny Bonhomme to his team. he stated that his squad was pretty well set and if any team were in- tcrested in dealing with him for the players. he was the one who had to be pleased. Referring back to the game he said he got going pretty slow out there and appar- ently was an easy target for Phil Vitaie.

For the first two periods the Is- landers looked like themselves but some of the older players appear- ed to tire in the last session. This was not unexpected for the boys arrived home yesterday evening about four o'clock from their three-day road trip to Sydney and Glace Bay. The same thing has been affecting other teams accord- ing to reports from those who have seen mainland games. Such long road trips will be eliminated for the Islanders as soon as there are planes available.

The Islanders have received a number of bad breaks since the season got underway and in pract- ically every game. but over the long haul these will even them- selves up. They were especially un- lucky in the third period last night when they appeared on their way to getting sure goals on several occasions. They met a well balanc- ed squad in the Miners who were big and had speed to burn.

The weather for the past week has been ideal for football and the second Saints and P. W. C. took advantage of it yesterday after- noon. Dcspile the fact that the Saints overpowered their rivals the boys on both sides produced good plays and fans were treated to some of the nicest backfield running and passing that has been witnessed here for some time. There were also a number of hard. low tackles but the major- ity of the tackling was of the neck and shoulder variety.

Unfortunately three of the boys were forced out with arm or shoulder injuries. with two of them being from P.W.C. and one from S.D.U. Young "Kip" Ready. junior baseball pitcher. was one of the injured when he suffered a possible dislocated elbow in the last half. In one respect Cliff was a little fortunate in that it was his left. not his throwing arm. Gerald Birt of P.W.C. re- ceived a shoulder injury and Chandler of the same team an arm injury. .

Of late years Saint Dunsian's has been producing strong inter- mediate and third teams which has resulted from the formation of an inter-college league for the younger students. The founder of this league was Father Richard Ellsworth. an ardent follower of College sports. and his far-sight- edness has certainly paid divid- ends. All of the players who car- ried ihe Red and White yesterday were products of this league.

'Hie annual series between the two Colleges always produces its share of rivalry and pranks. but the boys pulled one this year which beat: them all. Thursday night some of the P.W.C. students held a football rally and a few of the boys thought that the field should have a few P. W. C. mark- ings so they decided to paint the P. W.C. colors on the goal posts. The Saints. however. were expect- ing some prank. but the P. W.C. boys struck earlier than was ex- pected with the result but the posts were. nearly painted before the Saints came out to the field.

The City students fled but left their step ladder and paint cans behind. Yemrday four S. D. U. students pended onto the field carrying a ladder and the result- ing roaring and cheering was far louder than for any play during the game. Big Walter Pawlyshn. Islanders first string left winger of last sea- son arrived in the City yesterday evening from Providence Pawiy- shn flew in by air and arrived at the air port at seven o'clock.

MIDDLETON. N.S.. Oct. 19 - (CP) - Middleton Cardinals won the Maritime intermediate base- ball title today. defeating Summer- side Holmans 6-2 in the fourth game of the best-of-three series.

The two teams split ii double- header which opened the series Wednesday and were tied 4-4 when the third game was called by .dark- ness in the 12th inning yesterday.

Big Gerry Ray scattered six hits to notch up the win today and his mates gave him airtight support. They were never threatened after the first inning when Holmans put together McKay's single and St-hurman's double to take a one- run lead.
