Before Spraying.
In order to spray fruit trees and vines intelligently it is quite
that we should know something about
essential
insects and pests that we want to
| destroy. Spraying is developed into an exact science, and while it is not necessary for the farmer to study science to comprehend the theory of spraying, » ie @tiibe ntial that he should take It 1S ite essentiai that he should take

pests.
‘To begin with life histories of various fungi we must form the basis of any methods of treatment which may be followed. A of this muse precede any attempt to reccom— mend amy spray. At certain stages of their existence most parastic fungi may be checked quite e sly, and at such times they should be attacked. At other periods of their life the very best spraying may have no good effect what- ever, and the farmer who undertook it would be discouraged and claim that spraying was useless. ‘The parastic fungus endeavors to establish itself in the plant to live upon it, and when he has once entered the tissues it is next to impossible to destroy it without kill- ing the plant at the same time. Thus it is essential to perform the work early in the life history of the fungus. ‘The sprays are intended to reach them be- fore they have entered the plants. This is the principle which should un- derlie all methods of spraying.
From this it can be seen that spray- ing is preventive rather than curative. It is practically impossible to cure the plant that has once been attacked so that the spores have become established in the tissues. There are some classes of fungus gromths which do not enter the tissues, and they are easily dealt with. The powdery mildew of the giape belongs to this class. It grows upon the outer suface of the plant, and it can be easily killed by dusting the plants with flowers of sulphur. The most injurious fungi are those which do not begin. outside, and gradually work into the tissues, but which grow mainly within the host plant. The spores of this class of fungi are lodged in the blossom or stem, and they must be reached before the stems and foliage have matured. The stems and expand- ing blossoms must be covered with some substance that will destroy the spores as soon as they germinate, or even before.— Exchange.

The Best Way to Use Hen Manure.
A young farmer whohas hada few years success in the poultry business, asks how he can best use hen manure on the land he cultivates. He has us- ed it in various ways, but never with Satisfactory results. In most cases the crops to which it has been applied have been injured rather than benefit— ed. Itseems tobe so strong as to burn the roots of all plants coming in contact with it. Last year he used it on potatoes, but did not dare to put it in the hill ; he spread it on tne surface along the rows after the crop was near- ly grown, leaving it without cultivating itin. It did not injure the crop, nor did it seem to do any good. He is now tempted to abandon its use as a fertil-— izer, which would be a very foolish thing to do.
Poultry manure is one of the most valuable by-products of the farm. It is more concentrated than most farm manure, for it is usually made from richer material, and contains both the solid and liquid parts. I have several times injured crops when hen manure has been put in the hill or drill. It will even destroy potatoes if applied freely in the hill. It is rich inammonia which is poison to vegetable or animal life if not greatly diluted.

The manure from a poultry yard ought to be made to produce all the green stuff the flock can use, such as clover, cabbage, and beet root for winter, and besides a large portion of the grain. In New England it pays to purchase wheat and bran for hens, but the corn can be grown at a profit by properly using the droppings and sweepings collected in the houses. Dry soil or sifted coal ashes should be used freely to preserve the manure without waste.—N. W. Cheever in New England Farmer.
