in the fourteenth century, was admonish- ed by a vision, to lay the foundation efa bridge on a rock, which he would find rolled from the highest ground; all former attempts having failed in discovering a sufficient solid foundation for the pur- pose. This singular circumstance he mentioned to Sir Theobald Granville, Lord of the Manor. through whose exer- tions the bridge was finished, and the ex- penses defrayed by voluntary contribu- tions ; which hatl so good an efl'ect, that the present work was not only completed, but a sufficient. revenue established to keep it in repair forester; a list of the sub- scribers' names has been preserved to the present day. Exramnnmanv Naaaartve.—The Quebec Gazette of Wednesday week re- lates the following:-“ A native ofBarn- stable. Massachusetts, named Nicksou, arrived in this city yesterday, on his way in Bangor, State of Maine, from which he emigrated with his family about five years ago for the “ Far West.” He took with him about seventeen hundred dol- lars and got land in Indiana, 47 miles from St. Louis, and found it very produc- tive, but the price of produce was so low, and labor so deer, that he was obliged to give it up : heat 25 cents, Indian corn 6 cents for cash and 8 cents a bushel.—

ROMANCE OF LIFE.

Homer is a village in Shropshire. Like all other villages in Shropshire, or any where else, it consists prin- cipally of one long street, with a good

number of detached houses scattered'

here and there in its vicinity. The street is on a. slight declivity, on the

It contains the shops of three butchers, five grocers, two bak- ers, and one apothecary. 0n the right hand, as you go south, is that very excellent inn, t he Blue Boar ; and on the left, nearly opposite. is the public hall, in which all sorts of meetings are held, and which is alter- natelyconverted into a dancing-school, a theatre, at church, a chapel, a ball- room, an auction-room, an exhibition room, or any other kind of room that may he wanted. The church is a little further oflfiand the parsonage is, as usual, a white house surrounded with trees, at one end of the village. IIodnet is morever the market-town of the shire, and stands in rather a populous district ; so that, though of email dimensions itself, it is the rally- ing place, on any extraordinary oc- casion, ofa pretty numerous popula- tion.

One evening in February, the mail from London stopped at the Blue Bear, and a gentleman wrapped in a travelling cloak came out. The guard handed him a small portman- teen, and the mail drove on. The stranger entered the inn, was shown into a parlour, and desired that the landlord and a bottle of wine should be sent to him. The order was spee- din obeyed; the wine was set upon the table, and Gilbert Cherryripe himself was the person who set it there. Gilbert next proceeded to rouse the slumbering fire, remarking, with a sort of comfortable look and tone, that it was a cold raw night.

There was something both in his face and figure that distinguished him from the crowd. You could not look upon him once, and then turn away with indifference. When the service was over, our hero walked out alone, and shut himself up for the rest of the day in his parlour at the Blue Bear. But speculation was busily at work, and at more than one tea-table that evening in Hodnet,con- jectures were oured out with the tea, and swallowc with the toast.

A few days elapsed,and the strang. er was almost forgotten ; for there was to be a subscription assembly in Hodnet, which engrossed entirely the minds of men. It was one of the most important events that had hap- pened for at least a century. Such doings had never been known before. '
