A RACE FOR LIFE,

The new torpedo boat Le Grandeur ran into the harbor at Boulogne last Friday morning at a high rate of speed, and was at once abandoned by her crew. Sbe had been partly burned and was filling with water. La Grandeur was attached to the fleet now mancuvring in the channel. During the early morning she collided with the armored cruiser Jean Bart. The first examination of her hull showed that she was badly damaged, and the water was entering so fast that it would be a race for life to get her into port. She was headed for Boulogne. Fucl was piled on her fire until she was run- ning 25 milesan hour. Her boiler plates grew red hot, the woodwork caught fire and the flames rapidly spread beyond the control of the crew. The 20 men manning the vessel fought the fire with desperation, preserving perfect discipline despite their growing agony as the flames crept to- wards the magazine. Only one man, and he was a recruit, gave up and tried to jump overboard. He was caught in time, however, and was put in irons.
