gated the Island of Cuba.

The Simpson bugged the shore closelv keeping within from three to five miles off beach continually.

All the lighthouses on? the Cubdasa coast Were in operation and at many places for - tifications of sand and earth are being hurriadly erected.

During the early part of the past week the blockade on the northern coast has been left entirely to a few gunboats and smal]! vessels of ihe mosquito fleet.

Schley’s equadron blockaded Cienfuegos from last Sunday until Wednesday hoping to trap the Spanish fleet and then left for Savtiago de Cuba.

Since then Cienfuegos has not been blockaded at all.

The Italian steamer Adula arrived bee

yesterday from Cienfuegos’ and found it could enter and depart at will.

Sampson found only a weak blockade at Havana, Bahia, Sturda, Cardenas, aud Matanzas.
