Potice Court.—John McLauchlin on com- viaint of George Auld, charged with the lar- ceny of a box of raisins, contessed, and was given three months imprisonment with hard | labor. Terrence McAttee was fined $2 or eight days for drunkenness. Twenty-two Scott Act cases were also adjudicated upon. John Bolger and Charles Harvie were each sentenced totwo months imprisonment for third offences, and John Reid was fined $50 e: two months for a first offence. Eleven cases were dismissed and eight adjourned.

Excursion To West Inpres.—Mr. W. W. Clarke advertises an excursion to the West Indies by the steamer Alpha which sails from Halifax on the 15th February, at | greatly reduced rates. The round trip will | occupy about three weeks, four or five days | of which time will be spent in Bermuda | and Kingston. Persons buying tickets can | remain over one voyage it they wish. The railway authorities will issue tickets at one fare and a half from Pictou landing. Those who have travelled in the Alpha with Cap- tain Crowell speak in the highest terms of both ship and master and are always glad of an excuse to make another trip. Mr. Clarke will be happy to furnish intending excursiunists with further particulars.

PecuLiAR ACCIDENT. t might have been

says: —A peculiar, and wha a serious accident, occurred at Lauark lime quarries one day recently. The customary method for thawing dynamite is in hot water. The water, after being used, is thrown just outside the door, thus causing a quantity of ice to accumulate. One day one of the men took a shovel of hot ashes from the forge and threw it upon the ice for the purpose of pre- venting slipping, when a terrific explosion re- sulted. The frost had apparently separated the nitro glycerine from the water, leaving it in the proper condition for an explosion. No great damage was done, although we are in- formed that a similar accident occurred in the same way and at the same place a year or more ago, which blew the sill from under the building. silt

A Peccitan Case. —A farmer named Mac- donald, living at Mount Stewart, had several sheep stolen from him some time ago. He ascertained thatthe sheep after being stolen had been sold to a butcher in Charlottetown, by whom they were killed and disposed of In the usual way. Hecame to town and after searcbinu one or two slaughter houses found the marked “pelts” of two of his flock en the premises ot a Grafton Streec butcher. Instead of taking steps for the arrest of the thief, he had the butcher, who bought the sheep in good faith, taken in charge. But when the
