A Pittsburg Detective With the Toughest Skull In the Country.

‘It’s the hardest nut in the country.’ said Detective Dick Brophy proudly as he laid his band on Detective Paddy Fitz- gerald’s head.

It’s a fact, too—at least no one has come forward with his own head to disprove tie ‘aim, When Fitzgerald was a common policeman, Lawrencevilie

none of the toughs ever thought of hitting him on the head when resisting arrest. They alwzys sought a vital spot. There is only one head splitting weapon that he ever dodged, gud that was some years ago, when a no- toricus bad man who hung out at Four- teenth street and Penn avenue aimed a dblow at him with a baseball bat. Fitz- gerald ducked on that occasion and butted bis opponent into insensibility.

The other nighta policeman walked into headquarters and produced a new hand billy, ths finest, he said, ever made. Fitz- geraid reached for it, rapped it on the top uf his head five times, burst the leather knob and sent the shot with which it was loaded flying all over the room, Three other policemen, who declared that it was aput up job and that the weapon had been doctored, had to buy new hand bil- lies, for Fitzgerald tcok every one as fast as presented and broke them on his skull.

Matt Weiss, a Smithtield street saloon keeper noted for his hard head, became jealous some time ago of Fitzgerald’s rep- utation and challenged him toa head test- ing match. The two men grasped each other by the wrists and indulged in a but- ting ret to. For a minute or two thers was a sound as of a husky woodman cut- ting down heavy timber, and Weiss keeled over, vanquished. It’s remarkable, too, that both men are of gentle disposition. Their skulls, though hard, are packed with gray matter, astheir success in their occa- pations proves. Matt Weiss has become rich keeping a saloon, and Fitzgerald is considered one of the most intelligent de- tectives on the forcsa.— Pittsburg Letter in New York Sun.

Under the trees of its park Edmund Waller paid his addresses to the haughty Lady Dorothea, whom he celebrated as Sach- arissa: But the heart of Lady Dorothea Sidney—who was the most beautiful woman cf her time—was untouched by Waller’s amatory verses, and she reject- ed the poet in favor of the Earl of Sun- Gerland. Many years afterward the countess met Waller and, remindiug him sentimentally of the old days at Penburst, asked him when he wouki again write verses about her. ‘‘ Wben, madam,’’ said the poet rudely, ‘‘you are as young and as handsome as you were then.’’
