Four student council— lors were impeached and one more threatened to resign last night in what may have been the Biggest shakeup in the history of the UPEI Students' Union. »

Vice—President Mari- 1yn MacPherson, arts rep Sandra Dunsford, science rep David Cairns and edu— cation rep Byron Carr got the axe under Article 21, Section 9 of the UPEI Stu~ dent Union constitution, which states that "any Council member who misses any three conseCutive Council meetings or any

and the Speaker shall in- form Council and a date of bye-election shallebe set."

This is the first time the constitution has ever been,

enforced in this regard. V Discussion on the subject was minimal -- mainly because the im- peachments are automatic according to the consti— tution -— until student union comptroller Ted Crockett turned in his resignation during the meeting. He said his major reason for resigning was that he "didn't believe in the organization any more, because of the way

asked for a vote of con— fidence from the council by asking them to vote on whether or not to accept his resignation. However, Council decided not to ,vote on the matter, because the overall feeling was that it was Crockett's decision to resign, not theirs.

_ Crockett eventually decided to hold his resign— ation until Wednesday's executive meeting, when he will submit his final decision.

More questions then arose about the validity gof the clause in the :constitution making the impeachments of the other_

These impeachments were the biggest news But there was other business. Charles Mills was ratified' as speaker with the ap— proval of the Personnel Board, and a change in the student representation on the Senate was considered}

Presently theunion vice—president has an ex— officio seat on the Senate, but many councillors felt that two automatic seats on Senate are too many for a five—person exec- utive, since the president already has a seat. So -it was recommended that the vice-president's automatic seat be replaced

' by a fifth elected stu-

dent.

In order to make thia change in the constitution, a general meeting of the student body will be re— quired. This meeting is tentatively scheduled for before the students' union election speeches.
