Stitt Taere.—The intelligent juryman is still an important factor in tne administration of justice in the United Scates. An exchange says that in the case of the man Barber, tried for the murder of an aged woman ia Ithaca, N. Y., the jury last week returned a verdict of arson. The coart reminded the jury that the prisoner was not on trial for arsoa, but for murder. A half hour later the jury re- turned a verdict of murder in the first degree.

Tae Stoxm.—Monday’s storm was very severe at Bathurst, N. B. A violent gale from the northwest, accompanied by snow and rain, continued from about 6 a. m. to 6 p, m. A temporary wooden roof which hadj st been placed over the tower of the Roman Ca- tholic Church, was lifted by the gale and strik- ing the large stone cross on the front peak, tore it from its position, precipitating it to the ground. The cross was about 8 feet in height and weighed about 1,800 pounds.
