Church Union Meet- ing at Marshfield

In spite of the selvere weather last evening a large number o! those interested gathered in the lMarsbiield Baptist Church hall to hear the Presbyterian side of the Church llnion issue. Considerable interest was aroused in this meet- inpoyving to tho tactics of the loc- a1 Unionists who tiled t0 prevent the meeting being held at all.

The Presbyterian ‘Church was closed against the "Antis" by some of the Presbyterian Unionist officials though the same church had been given to a Unionisvdele- gation of speakers some months ago_ tEndeslvors were also made to prevent the meeting being held where it, was, in the Marshfleld Baptist ‘Church. but these proved unsuccessful: the desire for fair play overruling all specious objec- tions. -

The Rev. Wm. Orr Mulligan of St, James Church. Charlottetown was the speaker and for over two hours was listened to with the closest attention. He dealt with

interesting manner and was thank-- ed by many for his clear handling

points involved in the question. He traced the movement from its be- ginning and dealt with it from the religious, ecclesiastical, economic, missionary and legal aspects. He lshowed that the meanings of Scrip- ture passages ln support of-organ- ic union were not properly used and that meanings were read into them _to suit the purposes of the Unionists. Mn, lMiu 1 l i g a n explained the situations in the Home and Foreign Mission fields and showed how co-cperation had solved prac- tically all the problems and organ- ic union could give very little of a help in view of the extent of co- operation. In dealing with the As- sembleys action the speaker show- ed how, "the rights of the people were being slowy overridden and quoted from standard authorities the. real interpretation of the rights and duties of the Church Courts. He dealt at some length with the principles involved in the famous Free Church Appeal case of 1904 Lord Lindley had stated that: "If. therefore, a synod, or coun- cil under color of exercising their authority, were to destroy tho church which they were appointed
