A Fara Fire.—-A sad event occurred at Pembroke, some four or five miles from Woodstock, N. B., last Thursday night. The house of David McKenzie, a farmer, caught fire while all the family were asleep. When McKenzie woke up he found the house in flames, and barely succeeded in "getting his wife out of the house in time save to save her life. One of the children was burned to death. Mrs. Me- Kenzie is crazed with grief. Both she and her husband received serious injuries.

The attention of Commercial Travellers is called to the following sections of an Act pons by the Legislative Assembly of Prince

ward Isiand, Session 1894, intituled “*An Act to Impose a Direct ‘Tax on Certain Classes of Traders ” :—

1. “ From and after the passing of this Act every casual trader not permanently residing in this Province doing business within this Province, commonly known as “ Commercial Travellers,” and every person not permanent- ly residing in this Province, and who sells either for himself or any other person any

Ss, wares or merchandize in this Province, or solicits or canvasses for orders either for himseifor any other person for the sale, ex- change or purchase of any goods, wares or merchandize within this Province, either by the production of samples, photographs, cata- logues, printed or written matter, or simply by word of mouth without the production of samples, photographs, catalogues, printed or written matter, shall, before he or she enters upon the business of so selling any goods, wares Or merchandize, or soliciting or can- vassiiig for such orders, pay to the Provincial Treasurer of this Province an annual licen e fee or direct tax of fifteen dollars.”

2." Upon payment of the said license fee or direct tax, the said Provinciai Treasurer shall grant a license authorizing the person therein named tose)l goods, wares and mer- chandize in this Province, and to solicit and canvass for orders for the sale, exchange or purchase of goods, wares and merchandize within this Provimee. Such license shall be granted and remain in force for the space of one year following the date upon which the said license shall be granted and no longer.”

3. “ any such Commercial Traveller or per- son not permanently residing in this Sro- vince as aforesaid, who, aiter the passing of this Act, shall sell any goods, wares or mer- chandize, or solicit or canvass for orders for the sale, exchange or purchase of any goods, wares Or merchandize in any manner afore- said within this Province without havin first paid the said license fee or direct tax, an obtained the said license, shall foreach and every occasion upon which he or she shall sell any wares or merchandize, or so}i- citor canvass foran order for the sale, ex- change or purchase of any goods, wares or merchandize as aforesaid, be liable to pay the sum of two hundred dollars tothe said Pro- vincial Treasurer.”
