Hockey Panthers Split

Last Friday the UPEI Hockey Panthers played host to the St. FX X- Men at the Civic Centre. The X-Men, led by Guy Loranger’s three points, came away with a 4-2 victory over the home team. This was the third victory of the season for the X-Men, improv- ing their record to 4-6-4-1.

The determining factor for the victory came by way of special teams. The X-Men went 3 for 6 on the power- play, while the Panthers went 1 for 7. This was the first road victory of the season for the X-Men as they moved two points ahead of the Panthers in the AUS standings. Goal-scorers for the X-Men were Loranger with two goals, and Paul Dunphy and Kurt Walsh with one each. For the Panthers, scorers were Brandon Coalter and Ryan Power. The Panthers were outshot 30 to 29.

On Saturday night, the Panthers played host again, this time to the Saint Mary’s Huskies, and man- aged an amazing come from behind 4- 3 victory in the late stages of the game. The Panthers had been held without a shot for the first 11 minutes

of the third period before they coun- tered with three unanswered goals with just minutes remaining. Down 3- 1, Cleon Smith scored with 6:35 remaining to cut it to a one goal game. Twenty-five seconds later, Lorne Misita beat two Huskies defencemen and the goalie to tie the game at three. At the 17:22 mark, Smith again deposited the puck in the back of the net after a missed shot by Kris MacPhee hit the end boards and went to Smith. This turned out to be the eventual winner.

The win snapped the Panthers’ four-game losing streak, improving their record to 5-8-3 on the season. Goal-scorers for the Panthers were Smith with two; Passmore and Misita. For the Huskies, scorers were Lindsay Plunkett and Brad Morgan with two. The Panthers outshot the Huskies 34 to 32.

The Panthers next games are on the road in Moncton on Friday and UNB on Saturday. They return home to face St. FX again on Wednesday, January 16 at 7:00PM at the Civic Centre.
