WINTER TRAVEL

Until about twenty years ago, horses and Ilelgha and trains were the accepted mode of winter travel. It was taken for granted that auto- mobiles would be stored away, usually only in December, and would remain then until the first day of . The era of snow plough: and now free roads had not arrived. There was I saving in not operating the car or truck and tractor: with their ability to waddle through now had not be- come sufficiently numerous an to bo I factor in winter transportation. ' As the yearn went by, horses be- came fewer. cars became more de- pendable in winter and more and more wheel travelling has come to be the accepted pattern for winter. The transition during the past five year: has been favored by com- pnrntively light snowfalls but the present winter in apparently not overly concerned with man's de- pendence on gasoline and rubber tires. Agriculture perhaps more than any other industry or calling re- presents a triumph of hope over expertence. In spite of reverses, losses. desappolntments. discoura- gement and all the heartache of unfulfilled hope which go to make up the historical pattern of farm life, farm people nevertheless bring to bear on their problems and into their lives that hope which leads them to, believe that there is a sunny side to the cloud and a bag of gold at the end of the rainbow. It is well both for farm people and for consumers that this is the case. If experience and the realities of the past were the only guiding principle for the farmer, farm pro- duction would follow a much differ- ent pattern and the consumer in particular and the nation in gen- eral would very soon face the rea- lity of providing agriculture with fair pay for its labor and a fair re- turn for management and invest- ment. The people who state that farming is a business and who be- lieve that it can be rationalized with figures in a ledger overlook the fact that farming involves I great deal more than the ordinary pursuits of buying and selling and of manufacturing. Canada can show thousands of farms which were never successful business proposit- his but which nevertheless made I contribution to nation building which cannot be marinated in dol- lars and cents. The Pro- vince of Quebec which for many years did not consider the setting up of the Legislation is now pro- ceeding with it at the present ses- sion of its Legislature.

If agriculture is to continue on I sound basis and survive the pre- sent cost-prlce squeeze, attention must be paid to more than pro- ductive efficiency. that attention .must extend to marketing effici- cncy and economy in all its branch- es and this suggests the necessity and importance of fanners exam- ining carefully in all branches of agriculture the systems and prac- tices common in moving their pro- ducts to the consumer.

NOT POTATOES ALONE

The importance of potatoes as I cash crop and the effect of potato prices on the general economy of the Province tends to mask the ifact that all may not be well with iother sections of the agricultural .picture. In years of good potato lprices returns from this Depart- ment may be used to make up for losses occurring in cattle, poultry, or hogs and to mellow the present basic weakness in agriculture, the ever increasing cost of production. Too often. low potato prices are given all the blame for the fann- er's problem. Other aspects of the picture should be carefully studied and their importance placed In the proper perspective.

FARM CREDIT

Generally. agriculture over I long period of years has not been sufficiently profitable to provide

fair returns for the labor involved, interest on capital investment, de- preciation on equipment or operat- ing capital in suficient volume. To a large extent, agriculture has al- ways been financed on borrowed money. Credit has been and will

Montague Camera Club Meeting

The Montague Camera Club held its regular meeting on Thursday evening at the club room. For the last few meetings the members (have been busy fit- ting up a fully equipped dark- room In the club room. The club has obtained permission to use I room in the Town Hall. -

Much credit is due Mr. Gilbert Clements and other mexnbe - who have lent equipment for the use of the members who can go to the dark room to do I complete photo job-from developing aftlm to enlarging the final print with the equipment now available. It is felt that this will give an ex- cellent opportunlty to present and prospective members to practice the fun of photography without having to buy expensive equip- ment for themselves.

Members are at present busy with pictures for the annual salon to be held in March in Charlotte- town. Also at recent meeting: several showings of color slide! have been greatly enjoyed.
