Mr. James Tuplin, New Annan, sold a three-year old horse some days ago for which he received close on $400 in hard cash. Good !

The manufacture of farm implements is going on lively in the east end of the town. Hali’s Manufacturing Company are finishing some 45 or 50 threshing machines, more than one-third of the number being self- cleaners. These are shipped to the neigh- boring provinces in considerable numbers. Dickieson & Clark have about 100 of ‘their fan mills and seed separators ready for use.

White oats appear to be unusually good this season and are coming to market in considerable quantities, some shippers hav- ing already close on 5,000 bushels on hand. They range from 36 to 38 cents and the general impression is that prices will rule low this season. We were the other day shown at Mr. Holman’s warehouse certainly the finest sample of white oats we ever saw. The grain is scarcely inferior in size to first class barley, and we are informec they weighed 45 pounds to the bushel.

From a conservation a friend had the other day with the Supt. of Dorchester Penitentiary, it appears Howell (the Mal- peque murderer) wanted special attMtion on arriving at headquarters. He said he must have a good bed as he had knocked about a good deal that day and was tired. The Supt. kindly informed him that he might select the softest plank he could find in the floor and rooston it till morning. Next day he was asked what he was most proficient at, to which he replied that he was boss at pitching manure. This task was assigned him and from his proficieucy at the work we are told that he has been made boss of that special branch of labor.

Sir W. P. Howland says Manitoba ‘and the Northwest will have 2,000,000 bashels of wheat for exportation this year, and that amount may be expected with good harvests to double e«ch year for some time to come. He thought the financial con- dition of Manitoba not so good as it should be and soon with care would be. ,

A fire broke out at San Fernando, Trini- dad, on the Ist inst., destroying forty houses, ~ The loss is estimated at £40,000 steriiny. A fire in Mumfordville, Ky., on the J0th inst destreyed property to the value of $800,000. Cedar Bluff hotel, sit- uated on the east bank of Saratoga Lake, was destroyed by fire on the 10th inst. The commander of the British man-of- war Swift telegraphs to the British Admir- alty that he arrived at Batavia on the 9th inst. He reports that the great channel of the Strait of Sunda is probably unchanged. A Nijier light has disappeared but the light- house at Java head is undamaged. The Dutch authorities are taking every pre- caution oererent any damage to vessels, and their ships have been ordered to eruise at the evtrance of the Strait for the next three months co warn vessels of any changes that have oceurred in the channels.

The New York Sun’s Sunday cable con- tains the following :—‘‘The Queen ig at Her depression is returning and she has forbade the usual highland games, She frequently drives to Crathie Kirkyard, to visit Brown’s grave. Brown’s successor as personal attendant to the Queen is Francis Clark, a Highland Gillie, brought up on Deeside. She has entrusted the task of writing her biography to Misa Keddie, a Scotch lady introduced by Lord Ronald Gower, The Queen has ordered an extensive section of Windsor castle to be lighted with Edison’s eleetric light.”

Gotp Muines.—-The clean-up atthe Ox. ford gold mines for the last week of August resulted in 114 ounces from 30 tons of ore, $380 per ton— A bar of gold, weighing 300 oz., and valued at nearly $6,000, was brought to town on Monday, being the result of working the Salmon River mine during the month of August. <A bar of geld, weighing abont 70 ounces, was brought on Monday from the newly dis- covered lodes near Bridgewater, Lunen- burg Co. It is said to haye been taken from 600 Ibs. of quartz selected from five tons of ore.— Hatifax paper.

The Australians will probably have their wishes met in the annexation of New Guinea. Mr. Forster, in a late address at Plymouth, declared that something would have to be done with regard to New Guinea, and no doubt Mr. Forsters’ view is ‘that which prevails in the Liberal circles in which he moves. Then, the prohability also is that a Protectorate will presently be established over the New Hebrides. It seems the first movement in favor of some such an Act was made by Presbyterian Ministersin Melbourne, by whose brethren the Qhristianization of those Iblands has been largely efiected.

Capt. Knock and crew of the brigt. ‘‘Maggie Glen,” of Lunenburg, arrived at Yarmouth onthe 9h inet., in the brig “Boston Marine,” of Tosket Wedge, hav- ing been taken off the wreck of the “*Maggie Glen,” on the 28th of August. Capt. Knock reports that in N, lat. 25.15, long. 64.59, on the morning of the 26th of August, the “‘Maygie Glen” encountered a fearful hurricane which hove her down on her beam ends, and they were obliged to cut away the masts to save them- selves. ‘The captain and crew were on the wreck from the 26th to the 28:h—36 hours —without water, when they were taken off - the ‘‘Boston Marine,” Capt. Saunders.
