Twenty-two years ago John R. McDonald was the teacher of an. inferior school in the county of Iverness, N.S. He turns up now as the owner of the celebrated Naami gold mine in Australia, which is estimated to be worth $100,000,000. Mr. McDonald studied law, but failing to succeed in that profession devoted himself to speculation and the study of minerals.
The London correspondent of the New York Sun, who takes a kindly interest in Mr. Gladstone and the Liberal party in Britain, isthe author of the following paragraph ; ‘Yesterday (Saturday) for a little recreation the Grand Old Man drove over to the new village library, where he remained for five hours cataloguing the volumes as a labor of love. This morning he removed with his axe a tree which, to his experienced eye, seemed superflous.” The item is corroborative of recent reports, which indicate Mr. Gladstone's complete restoration to health.
