FISH AND DAME ASSN. MEETING LAST NIGHT

The annual meeting cf the Prince Edward Island Fish and Game Protective Association was held last night in the Board of Trade Room with Vice-President W. H. Tldmarsh in the chair. 1h the ab- sence of the secretary, Mr. D. A. MscKlnnon was appointed to act as secretary for the meeting.

In a. discussion arising out of the minutes of the last annual meet- ing Mr. R. E. Muteh, chairman of a committee to inquire into the possibility of having a. short open season on plover, reported that the request was refused. It was refused on the ground that other provinces would request the same privilege.

Some discussion took place as to whether it would be advisbsle to ask to have the season for shoot- ing dllcks open later. It was decid- ed not to ask for a change in the season.

The Vice-President gave a. brief resume of the work engaging the attention of the executive for the past year. He stated that the De- partment are to discontinue the importing and hatching of Ameri- can. spawn and the releasing of fry in the streams of the province. The restocking of streams with native fry is to continue however. He stated also that the netting of gaspereaux in the streams will likely be allowed next season. The nets will run with the stream, not across lt- In answer to a question as to whether trout would be taken in gaspereaux nets it was stated that they would not.

The chairman stated that the Association tried to get a. renewal of bounty on seals but were unsuc- cessful.

On motion it was agreed to ask the Department at Ottawa to ad- vance the opening season for trout from April 15th to May lst on all rivers and streams from the lowest mllldam to said stream to the sea.

At a special meeting of the City Council yesterday afternoon, follow- ing the opening of tenders for per- manent street construction, it was decided. that on motion of Coun. McDougall, seconded by Coun. Rat- trlly, that all street work. under the unemployment relief plan be done by the City Engineer. using 4 in. asphaltlc base with 1 in. asphalt top.

The resolution carried without dis- cusslon.

It was moved by Coun. Rsttray, seconded by Coun. 4101mm, that the City Engineer proceed with the con- struction of concrete sidewalks, storm sewers, including manholes and covers. The resolution carried.

A further resolution was adopted on motion of Coun. Rattray. second- ed by Coun. Hcnnessey, to the effect that the City Clerk furnish to the City Surveyor and keep revised a list of laborers and truckmen eligible to receive employment in street and sidewalk construction in accordance with the City plan of unemployment relief, and that the Surveyor em- ploy all ordinary laborers and truck- mcll only from such list so long as a sufficient number are available therefrom, and lay them off and re- employ substitutes every six working days.

The following street program was definitely decided upon: Ambrose St. from Brighton Road to Villa St-l Bayfield Street, from Elm Avenue to Queen Street; Richmond Street, from Weymoutll to Cumberland St; Cumberland Street. from Richmond to Grafton streets: Dorchester St. from Prince to Hillsboro Streets; Sydney Street, from Hlllshoro to Weymouth streets, and storm sewers for a portion of the block; On Up- pcr I-Illlsboro Street, storm sewers and curb to be laid from Euston Street to a point satisfactory to City Engineer.

In an interview with a Guardian representative, alter the Council meeting, Mayor Kennedy said the reason for deciding to have the street work done by the City was that in last year's work, of the total amount expended, only approxim- ately 20 per cent. was paid to the laborers, whereas, it was contended thnl; 40 per cent. should go to the laborers, 60 per ccilt. goillg towards material.

It is felt that, by having the work done under the supervision 0! the City Engineer, laborers will receive greater benefit.

Details as to the tenders received were not, available for publication, The Guardian was informed.

Death Yesterday Of Mrs. Hodgson

Sudden cessation came last even- lng to a. long life of love and good works for Mrs. Gertrude M. I-Iodg- son, widowed when a bride of only six or seven months by the death of the beloved Reverend-George wright Hodgson, almost fifty years ago.

Mrs. i-Iodgson had attended early celebration of the Holy Communion yesterday morning in the Chapel of St. Peters Cathedral, which nad been erected as a memorial of her hus- band, this llavlng been her custom daily during her lifetime, and in the afternoon she had been about in her beautiful garden at No. 5 Grafton Street. Coming back into the house for tea, she complained of faintness and within two or three hours she passed peacefully to her rest.

Her strong character, charming personality, and aboundlng hospital- ity, her unparalleled devotion to her church and the memory and aspira- tions of her husband, her klndliness and. love for flowers and animals all caused her to stand out as an excep- tional character and her loss will be mourned and her memory cherished in a very wide circle.

One of six sisters, she leaves to mourn particularly Miss Rosa Des- Brlsay, Mrs. Lawrence W. Watson and Mrs. James Simpson, all of whom made their home with her, the other two sisters, Mrs. Robert F. DeBlois and lVLrs. W. A. O. Morson having passed on some years ago. Lieutenant Governor DeBlois is a nephew.

. Sept. 21 — They'll come from all over the world for the launching of the giant Cunard- er 534 on Sept. 26.

The super-ship, of 73,000 tons. is designed to assure British marine supremacy without any doubt. With horsepower of somewhat under 200,000 compared with 72,000 for the Mallretanla, long the greyhound of the Atlantic, the new giant of the seas is expected to bring the speed records back to the Old Counlry.

It will be a public holiday in Glasgow and a. great day for Brit- ish shipping all over the world, when the 534 enters her clement. The King and Queen will attend, the Queen christening the ship, among hundreds of thousands. There will be several enclosurss holding many spec tutors, along with a floating grandstand in the shape of the liner Tuscania.

Special Guards

Getting the 534, as she is still officially designated, into the wat- er is a. tremendous job in itself. Great steel drag chains and laun- ching devices are already in place, hundreds of tons of oil and grease have been spread on the ways and the hull. Special guards have been erected to prevent injuries from flying blocks and splinters.
