PROFESSOR ROBERTSON’S PLANS,

Before the special committee on agricul- ture on Thursday, Profeseor Robertson gave an interesting address on his trip to England, and explained why he had been induced to place on exhibition there the mammoth cheese that had called so much attention to the importance of the dairying of Canadas. During his stay in the Mother Country he endeavored, by addresses and by talking with the retail merchants in many of the principal cities, to interest the public in the excellence of the fceod pro- ducts of the Dominion. A good deal of the success of the cheese business of Can- ada is owing to the fact that the cheese we export is sent to the market adapted to it. We have no time, he said, to edueste the taste of the English people, who are very conservative in reapect to what they eat. Five out of six of tne people you meet in ao ordinary way in England will talk about what they eat, and they have an aversion to any food product with a strong taste, especially cheese, not withstanding what has been said to the contrary. One of the reasons why Canadian butter has gone out of the market there is owing to the fact that the artisans have become much more fastidious in their tastes, and will not buy any food that is not of good quality; and too much of the butter exported from Can. ada hes that objection. Another thing he noticed was that the shopkeepers wanted a higher profit for selling new articles, and in many cases cheese, uc better than beat Canadian, was sold as best English at an advance of 8 cents per pound. Little things, such as size and shape and mode ot boxing, tcld against Cuanadivsn cheese getting the highest price. kt is very im- portant to have good, strorg boxes, as the 1088 on broken packages will average a cent a pound, whereas the extra cost of having good boxes, well nailed, will not be over 12 cts. each. All Canadian cheese should be branded, not only on the package, but also on the cheese itself. All cheese should be marked plainly as to its quality, and skim milk cheeee should be so calied. There is 4 growing preference tor Canadian cheese in England, and if the producers maintain the quality, the demand will be greater at a higher price. In bu'ter, more attention should be paid to the package, If butter is shipped in ordinary unpainted tubs, after it arrives on the market it has the Jappear- ance of being used a long time, prevents the best price from being obtained. Prof. Robertson showed the Committee an improved butter tub that he recommend- ei tu the people who ship to Nngland. It was hooped with iron and neatly painted on the outside. The inside was varnished with a preparation of parafine wax and the cover lots in without any rim, and is easily removed. It will hold about 50 or 56 pounds and costs 50 cents, and is made of spruce. Ths average retail price of good butter in England is 32 cents per pound; but what was sold last summer only realized from 95a. to 116s. per 112 pounds. The cheese from the Experimental Farms sold at the best prices obtained for beat Cana- dian cheese.

Referring to bog products, the Professor said there was not sv much complaint

against the Canadian article, which sold for about one cent per pound less than the best Danish; but the Danish farmers got 9 cents per pound live weight, whereas the Canadian got 34 cents per pound on the average. We could double the output of

hog products by feeding coarse grains and the refuse from the dairy, and as competi- tion among middlemen in this business increases, the farmers will get fairer prices.

ions: 4 bushel of corn, 4 bushels of hore wears to the acre, and seed for 4 an acre of supfi»wers. It would take i22 bushels of coarse grains, along with the product of twe scres of corn, to produce the same result as could be obtained frem the growth of 24 scres f this combination. Senate and will contest the county of Cham. plain; Mr. Carigoan, the present member, re-| signing in hia favor. Mr. Carignan will be! appointed to the Senate in place of Hon, Mr. Ross, and the Mayor of Nicolet will be ap pointed in place of Hon, Mr. Angers.

Much surprise is expressed at the absence of Mr Davies from the division on Mr. Me- Carthy’s resolution. It is av opea secret that he was not in favor of the part discriminating agains: the United Sixties in favor of England.
